1. yeah i know what you mean
i think they're gearing their programing for shows that will attract the most viewers instead of ones that will teach us about history. The worst are those stupid alien conspiracy shows they have. What the fuck does that have to do with history!?!?!

9. Hey I kind of like the UFO shows
In one of them they totally exposed the CIA SOP for dealing with UFO sightings. Right after the Mexican air force videotapes, I could spot the CIA effort to debunk: a press release saying it was ball lightning.

2. You are right. All war all the time.
All military, all guns. Some of the other channels are becoming propaganda as well.

3. I'm with you.
Every once in awhile I still enjoy it (The Barbarians series was interesting...)

But of all the channels I have on satellite, they are the only network showing Bush's anti-Kerry commercials (that I've seen), and I scream and yell at the TV every time they come on.

Blegh.

Just how many times do they show the history of the labor movement?

6. Definitely should change to the "War and Weapons" channel.
They are way to fixiated on war, weapons, carnage, etc....makes one wonder if there is a hidden agenda to program a more war-like mentality in our general population.

8. Yea They had the audacity
To show the history of Saddam and talk about how Reagan financed him and they showed the pictures of Rummy shaking hands with him, and how Saddam's government brutally tortured muslim fanatics thereby giving you the picture that the idea of an al-queda and Saddam holding hands is pretty far-fetched.

I actually find their programs on warfare and weaponary to be very interesting and hardly glorified at all. The only time they seem to glorify our soldiers is when they show the old footage from WW II and I think those soldiers deserve their due respect to be shown in a heroic image.

16. Was that the one where at the end
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 03:49 PM by SiouxJ
they talked to experts on Iraq and asked them what the outcome of a possible war would be? As I recall, some of them said we would end up bogged down there for 20 - 25 years and it would cost billions & billions of $$$. They pointed out that it would be next to impossible to get the different religious groups to get along etc. and strongly advised against it (as I recall).

28. Yeah, me neither
sure, a lot of war and gun shows (groan) but they also have a lot of great, mind opening things, like they did a History's Mysteries (my fave) about secret societies (including Skull & Bones etc.). It was my first exposure to it a few years ago. I'm sure it was a lot of people's first glimps into them.

As someone else aptly stated - how often do we hear about the history of the labor movement?

I still watch some programs occasionally.

I appreciate their war documentaries as I am a proponent of remembering the past to prevent being condemned to repeat it. Some of the really excellent programs have focused on Stalin's treatment of the Ukraine, Japanese war attrocities, and a recent host of excellent martial arts history programs.

Compare The History channel to Discovery Times. Discovery Times is a full on Bush propaganda channel, all Saddam all the time.

15. DiscoveryTimes is nauseating
they have shows on like "Sons of Saddam" and "Saddam/Osama", and the one documentary that they had on Yugoslavia had RW commentators dissing Clinton.

Truly nauseating...

24. TimesDiscovery - Pure Propaganda
after watching the Saddam episode, swore to never watch again.

Judith Miller was part in this episode and this was well after the whole WMD claims she wrote about turned out to be pack of lies.

17. I think that their viewpoint is very skewed towards older vets who want to
hear people opine about how this or that campaign was just like some roman campaign or the entire content of Mailbag. It used to be more interesting pre-911 IMHO

21. I dunno
I'm anything but and older vet and still find myself fascinated by stuff like Nation to Nation and Clash of Warriors, Histories Mysteries, and History Undercover... I like Mailbag because R. Lee Ermey is funny as hell.

I am a history fanatic, especially World War 1 and Sino-Japanese War stuff.

12. You just noticed?
When was the last time they had a documentary on Bhopal, Three Mile Island, My Lai, the US's illegal conquest of Hawaii...

Apparently by "History" they only mean the part with some glory for the US.

13. I watch it from time to time, it is pretty good
The one I saw recently was tech of the wild west, it was a cool episode.

I admit the history of the gun can get boring, I saw one of them but they have so many and it gets tedious.

14. Well, when they did a program on Doston the murderous
Afghani warlord praising him because he was anti-Taliban, and then started running those pro-war specials about Iraq and Saddam, it became obvious they had become part of the same cabal that controls the broadcast channels. I don't watch anymore unless it's something about ancient or medieval history.

A single US programme that wasn't propaganda in some form or another.

Even 'Friends' was propaganda for the "US way of life".

27. Mixed feelings here...
As a WWII history buff I enjoy alot of their shows, I am pro-gun control and a pacifist but still like the history of armamnets. Guess that came with growing up watching "Combat" reading "Sgt. Rock" comics, playing army, etc.

But, they did show those Sadaam/Iraq shows in the run up to the war and they are owned by Disney who wouldn't distribute Fahrenheit/911. I guess ya gotta pick and choose...
