HAVE A HAPPY NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING!
Forget about putting Reagan's handsome, rugged visage on the currency or Mount Rushmore. Forget about naming the Pentagon, or DC, or the United States after him. The most appropriate tribute in recognition of his legacy would be a National Day of Mourning federal holiday.
It can be held on his birthday in February. Like other holidays, it can commemorate multiple events. I can think of dozens that I can mourn as an American -- many not even related specifically to Reagan. We can mourn for civilian casualties of our unjust interventions, the victims of US-sponsored right wing death squads and dictatorships. We can mourn for our lost Constitutional rights, democratic heritage, and respect among nations.
Since it would be inimical to Reagan's legacy, maybe we shouldn't give workers a free day off without pay. Instead, maybe workers should give the entire day's pay to the US Treasury to help pay off the massive deficits he and his ideological progeny have produced (not applicable to upper tax bracket, of course).
Instead of knee-jerk rejections to the slightest idea of commemorating our 40th president, let's help lead the effort! With DU's help we can create a groundswell of support. What can YOU do to help in the effort?
PS.: For some reason, I REALLY want a Chesterfield cigarette right now!
