if you are in DC area..come to Cathedral to honor reaguns VICTIMS 10:30am
STAND UP and honor reaguns VICTIMS...

DAWN's call to join this action

What: demonstration on Ronald Reagan’s Legacy
Where: Wisconsin Avenue in front of National Cathedral
When: 10:30 AM, Friday, June 11
Who: DC Anti-War Network

The DC-Anti War Network (DAWN) is calling on members of the community to remember Ronald Reagan’s legacy on Friday, June 11, on Wisconsin Avenue, outside of the National Cathedral.

DAWN encourages participants to bring signs that educate the profound impact of Ronald Reagan on his times and on ours. Whether it be the illegal arms for hostages scandal, the support of rightwing death squads in El Salvador and Nicaragua, the invasion of Grenada, the busting of the air traffic controllers’ union, the massive nuclear arms buildup, or the propping up of rightwing dictators in the Philippines and Chile, the killing of innocent civilians in Lebanon, the environmental destruction, and countless other acts, we call on people to bring signs that articulate Reagan’s impact on our world. The mass media has done a great job of telling us about Reagan’s sense of humor and some of his more endearing personal characteristics. However, we believe that we should also remember all that the man did of which the media has not reminded us. At the same time, we also believe we should remember all those who have died as a result of his life’s actions.

We ask that demonstrators be as silent as possible, letting their signs and banners speak for themselves. In the legacy of this particular man, there is much cause for sorrowful reflection.

Ronald Reagan is dead, but his legacy lives on. Let’s draw attention to that legacy so that we can fight it now and in the future. Later in the day, DAWN will be calling on the community to fight Reagan’s legacy by joining in another march on Donald Rumsfeld’s house. That march will begin at 6 PM at Dupont Circle and will call once again for Rumsfeld to resign from office immediately.

it's just too sad that NOBODY speaks for reaguns VICTIMS ..it'll be just a small but silent group (because the idea was just floated out in the past few days)...WE STAND UP for reaguns VICTIMS...so very sad that the news media does not even mention all the millions of human beings whose lives were destroyed by reaguns....

thanks for your support....I appreciate that a LOT....

3. I was very touched by this post
until I looked at the list, and saw once again what is now so common in this country, and this party... no mention of the poor IN THIS COUNTRY, who died because of this monster.

Why are we always the forgotten ones?

Please, remember your own brothers and sisters right here in this country.

4. if you read my post, you would have read a LOT about OUR

country and OUR citizens....here's some words from my post....referring directly to the people of the USA....

.... the busting of the air traffic controllers’ union, the massive nuclear arms buildup, .... the environmental destruction, and countless other acts....

BYW...if you will NOT help, then at least don't hinder....your post is certain to discourage more people from reading or STANDING UP...

I am tired of getting smashed, even here at DU, for STANDING UP and making the effort...smashed by those who are complicit in their laziness...smashed by those who will SIT ON THEIR BIG FAT BUTTS and do nothing but criticize or make excuses for their own bad behavior....

6. Yes, I read all that......
*NOTHING* about all the homeless people created in his misadministration, nothing about huge cuts to public housing, nothing about mental patients turned out into the street, nothing about the THOUSANDS of disabled people who killed themselves because they were cut off with no means of support. All these years later, for the most part, they are invisible. And, yes, that upsets me.

I actually asked you quite nicely to please include these people in your remembrances... they have been forgotten for too long.

So, you can be angry with me all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that SOMEONE needs to speak up about those in this country who also died because of that monster.

I also get tired of being smashed here at DU, so we have that in common. I DIDN"T "smash" you... I asked you to remember people who are left off your list. It's quite possible for you to gracefully recognize that omission, and add them to your list. That isn't a "smash"...... that's doing the same thing that you are doing.......standing up for those who are forgotten.

I've been attacked here because I've brought up poverty issues. I'm not going to back down. YOU have, however, attacked me, even though you know NOTHING about me, by calling me "lazy", sitting on my "fat butt", and making "excuses for my own bad behavior". Those are personal attacks, and you need to apologize. You have NO idea how much energy I've spent as an activist in the cause of poverty. NONE. Your attacks are totally uncalled for, and certainly not in the spirit of the cause you've decided to champion.

5. A "silent" demonstration...
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 12:17 AM by T Town Jake
...is one thing. But pleaaaassse I hope none of them start screaming and making a racket while they're trying to conduct the funeral. That would be Karl Rove's wet dream, and it would show up in every GOP campaign ad from here to November. They would try to paint it as "Kerry supporters wouldn't even let a former president's family mourn in peace..." etc., etc. It wouldn't be fair or true, but that's how that crew would spin it. CNN, Faux, and MSGOP would play every second of it daily for the next four months, also.

7. I agree ...
... I hated Reagan's administration as much as the next Dem, and am desparate to have the record corrected. HOWEVER ... this is the guy's funeral. His funeral. I'm sorry, but those on the fence between Bush and Kerry are going to be watching, and they're going to see Dems as having no class if they're holding a rousing protest outside a guy's FUNERAL. Any protest during the funeral should be silent ... and if it can wait until after the funeral, it would be better. Though we may not like it, the man was a LEGITIMATELY elected president (how novel for Republicans!), and his widow and kids are entitled to hold his funeral in peace. Before and afterwards, everyone is free to let 'er rip.

Remember -- I hated the Reagan Administration, what it did, and everything it stood for. But Ronald Reagan was other things, including a father and husband who died of a horrible disease without even recognizing his wife. Whatever you may think of him -- and I sure ain't crying for him -- the guy is entitled to an uninterrupted funeral.

8. Totally agree...
...with everything you've said. I hope these folks realize that there'll be plenty of time in the near future to set the record straight about what Reagan did as President, but his funeral is neither the time nor place for it. But my larger point to them is please, please, please, whatever else you do, don't give the GOP the perfect campaign ad: the one where a bunch of people are shown hollering and scuffling with police outside of the church where Reagan's services are being held and the words "Here are some John Kerry supporters" comes on the screen. As you pointed out, it's the folks on the fence we've got to swing our way now and I can't think of a worse way to turn them off than raising hell at a dead president's funeral.

9. I agree
I don't think protesting a funeral is such a good idea. I can't help but think of those who stand outside the funerals of people who have died from aids with signs and yelling. I just don't think a funeral is the right place best to wait till afterward.
