What to do about Iran?

I just read today that one of the Mullahs was demanding Iran be accepted by the UN as a nuclear power. They claim they are only interested in creating electricity. The thought of a hostile nation with nuclear capacity does not sound very comforting (no more than North Korea). How should the UN and other western nations respond? Tighter sanctions? Political isolation? Deadlines for inspections? If Iran does not concede to demands, what options are left?

Hey, we already have soldiers in Iraq, we could just sent them over to Iran?

If we stop being belligerant towards muslim states and aknowledge their right to exist and modernize combined with close UN monitoring of their weapons systems.

Accept them as world partners and place upon them the responsibilities that go along with that.

Dontcha think the muslim nations are concerned with Israel being a nuclear nation?

Someone in the area needs the ability to
negotiate with Israel and the US.
A nuclear Iran could be a stabilizing factor in the area.

3. We Should Leave Them Alone

I don't recall that Iran (or North Korea for that matter) ever unleashed nuclear horror on the innocent civilian populations of 2 major cities. I can only think of one country thats ever done that. That fact, couple with our having bush in office, makes me think the world would be wiser to trust Iran and North Korea with nukes than to trust the U.S. with them.

7. Pakistan having nukes is just as dangerous as Iran.

Iran getting nukes isn't the end of the world by any stretch. North Korea is a different matter. But, the ship has set sail on that one.

A genuine leader in the White House (not the phony fanatic we've got now) would be able to put together an international alliance to isolate Iran as much as needed. It needs to be a carrot and stick approach, light on the stick. Let them see in a non-belligerent way the benefits of forgetting nuclear weapons versus the detriments of having them.

Because of Bush* these countries see nukes as their only sure way to guarantee they won't get targetted for active regime change.

8. here's another complication

If the general population was as hostile as the Iranian government, it would be easier to say, "OK, we should get tough on Iran."

But we need to consider that most of the population loathes the mullahs and is more sympathetic than not to the West. If we can hold off as long as possible without getting aggressive with the mullahs, it would be much better to cultivate the good will of the Iranian people who will probably at some point replace the mullahs with a friendlier government down the road. Invading Iran would scuttle any chance of that.

I realized something. We've conquered two countries, one on either side of Iran. Could Iran have been the objective all along for the Pentagon & those jerks (to use Powell's words) in the Defense Dept. This notion somehow makes it all even more devious.

25. Actually, we haven't conquered anything. Afganistan is lost and we

haven't got a clue in Iraq. Iran certainly fit into the equation, but due to the complete incompetence of this administration, there's no way in hell to pull that one off.
