I will not support Vilsack for VP - Iowan
While the link could be late-breaking news, I put this in the general discussion topic. The Iowa Supreme Court just handed down an opinion this morning <http://www.judicial.state.ia.us/supreme/opinions/20040616/03-1948.asp> finding that Vilsack improperly item-vetoed a piece of right-wing repuke BS that totally undermines workers' compensation in Iowa. Vilsack was warned by the Iowa Trial Lawyers and Labor Unions to veto the entire bill - a bill reducing work comp while giving away Corporate Welfare. Vilsack argued that he could item veto the non-appropriations bill. Vilsack gambled with the lives of Iowa's working class and he lost. Way to go, chump.

FYI Kerry Campaign. I will not support the Kerry campaign if they select Vilsack as the VP. I hate Bush, but I cannot support Iowa's Governor any longer. He has sold out to corporate America and took the lives of many injured people along with him. In fact, he should resign in shame NOW!

1. You need serious help
If one innocent mistake makes you think that Bush would STILL be better, you need to wake up and look at the decay and destruction all around you.

No, I certainly do not think Bush will be better. But, I am not going to support another administration that sells out working people in favor of profitable, international corporations. Kerry can rise above this by not chosing Vilsack. I am writing the campaign today. Ultimately saving the Supreme Court by voting Kerry could bring me back, but Vilsack would make that very, very difficult.

Isn't your non-support of one candidate tantamount to support of another? And what, exactly, are your other choices?

Maybe it sucks that the system is the way it is. But we have to all work together to get the people in charge who come closest to representing our personal beliefs. NO ONE is going to suit you completely, but I'm going out on a limb in suggesting that Kerry, no matter who his running mate might be, is far closer to that than Bush is. So your choices are vote for someone else and be stuck with the guy who is the antithesis of your beliefs because you feel the need to make a statement vote that is completely and totally unheard (and it will be), or you can vote for the guy who comes closest to representing you (which IS the point of our system).

On edit: I should note that Vilsack is by far the least favorite of my VP choices (Gephardt is my #1, with Clark as a #2). I'll still vote for anyone Kerry chooses because our country cannot withstand four more years of Bush.

2. Isn't he the DLC pick?
Isn't he the DLC boy? I doubt he will be the nominee. Iowa is going blue anyway. Besides payback for his dirty trick in the Iowa caucus,I see no way he helps the ticket.

5. I'm sure this episode will hurt his chances
I'm sure the Kerry team is looking this episode over with a fine tooth comb. If the trial lawyers and unions are mad at him--in Iowa of all places--I think his stock just declined.

Myself, I think Vilsack is of minimal benefit. He lacks foreign policy experiemce--a major no-no in a post 9/11 world, especially for a Democrat--he is not terribly exciting and I only see him delivering Iowa. Clark or Edwards could provide more of a regional bounce.

As for your decision to not support him: that just makes no sense. If anything, by making him VP you get him out of Iowa and put him into a job with little institutional power. It's either him or Cheney.

7. Okay
Thanks DU - you have all brought me to my senses. Yes, Vilsack would be better than Cheney. But, I will still have to hold my nose by voting if Vilsack is selected. I will just know I am voting against Bush and voting for Lt. Gov. Peterson to take Vilsack's spot.

Thanks for bringing me to reality DU'ers.

8. Vilsack leaves me cold - but who cares?!?! He probably won't be the
nominee, and if he is I'm voting for Kerry anyway.

10. Vilsack was correct.

From the link you provided:

Moreover, by operation of the Iowa Constitution, no portion of the bill—including provisions approved by the Governor—became law because the bill as a whole failed to receive the affirmative approval of both the Legislature and Governor.

Vilsack's attempt at a line-item veto resulted in the entire bill failing to become law. Vilsack's "gamble" didn't cost you a damn thing.

13. That's where the fun lies.

What would be the fun of a discussion board where all the replies were:

"Yes"
"I agree"
"You're absolutely right"
