I am outraged that the US press would stoop to such a disgraceful level of incompetence that they would ignore this story.

Former US officials sign letter in French press calling for Bush poll defeat

PARIS (AFP) - Twenty-six US former senior diplomatic and military officials signed a letter published in France's Le Monde newspaper criticising President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s foreign policy, especially in Iraq (news - web sites), and calling for him to be voted out of office in November.

Washington, DC, Jun. 16 (UPI) -- Top former diplomats and military officials said Wednesday the Bush administration did not "rise to the responsibilities of world leadership."

The group, which calls itself Diplomats and Military Commanders for Change, said though it was bipartisan its members believe the administration had failed to preserve national security and provide world leadership.

"Serious issues are at stake," they said in a statement. "We need a change."

The group of 27, which has claimed every president since Harry S. Truman, said President Bush had adopted an "overbearing" approach to the U.S. role in the world.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush led the United States into an ill-planned Iraq war that weakened U.S. security, retired diplomats and military officers said on Wednesday in a challenge to one of Bush's main arguments for re-election.

"We all believe that current administration policies have failed in the primary responsibilities of preserving national security and providing world leadership," said a statement signed by the 27 retired officials. "We need a change."

The rare criticism by career senior U.S. officials came from a group that included members of both major political parties, two former ambassadors to the Soviet Union and a retired chairman of the military Joint Chiefs of Staff.
