Scrutiny on Kerry's VP Hunt Intensifies
Interesting article on the state of the Veepstakes

------
A recent Associated Press poll conducted by Ipsos-Public Affairs suggested that a majority of registered voters want Kerry to pick Edwards.

Four years ago, few predicted that Bush would turn to Cheney, who headed his search team, or that Lieberman would become the first Jewish vice presidential nominee.

"The vice presidential nomination almost always doesn't go to the person who the people most expect. That doesn't bode well for John Edwards," said Steve McMahon, adviser to former Kerry rival Howard Dean.

One certain surprise would be Dean. His campaign against Kerry was bitterly fought, and advisers to the presidential candidate point to Dean's low approval ratings among voters. Still, the former Vermont governor is keeping hope alive by campaigning for Kerry in states where independent Ralph Nader cut into Gore's vote four years ago.

Another former rival, Dick Gephardt, is well liked by Kerry and many of his advisers. "I'm happy to do whatever the Kerry campaign wants me to do to win this election," the Missouri congressman said in Michigan a month ago.

Among those also doing vice presidential spade work: retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark, Sen. Bob Graham of Florida, former Sen. Bob Kerrey of Nebraska, Gov. Mark Warner of Virginia and Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico.

2. I have to hand it to this article
They seem to mention just about everyone people are talking about (including Wes & Dean).

Nice to see.

5. Wes is my favorite; Graham would be great too.
I don't get the two Govs. No charisma, no gravitas. I also could work hard for Dean. I'd hate to see him disappear after energizing our party. It will probably be Edwards though. Two Senators: like JFK and LBJ.

6. Wes has national security credentials.
Getting us out of the Iraq mess will be job one,
so I think that gives Wes the edge.

Check out this article about why a Kerry/Clark ticket
would work. It's great. It's called "Full Metal Ticket."

3. Daily Howler had a bit on the Veep Sweepstakes
About how political writers would rather crank out pointless speculation on who might be Vice President than investigate, say, some of the false advertising put out by the Bush Campaign or the fact that the Bush Adminstration is pushing for a 10 month 1 week year. Daily Howler is great --> http://www.dailyhowler.com

7. Geographical Imbalance
Edited on Wed Jun-16-04 03:49 PM by connecticut yankee
Vermont is right next door to Massachusetts. Although Bush and Cheney are both from Texas, I don't think it would be wise to have two New Englanders on our ticket.

Edited for spelling.

9. I think geography is much less important these days
Not saying that Kerry should go with Dean because of this, but I do think that is the case.

With everything become more alike across the nation, I think people are more open to such things.

8. My endorsement is for Howard Dean
this ticket needs energy and passion. other good choices are Edwards and Clark. I would stay away from the others.

10. Clark would be a good choice... I don't want the Dems to lose a seat...
...anywhere because of a VP candidate. I think all Senators, Reps, and Governors could best serve the country by doing their current jobs. Edwards was the candidate I wanted near the end of the primaries, but really, I don't think a VP candidate will do much to help Kerry win.
