21. Actually some of the clothes
at Goodwill are pretty nice. I think Stepford wife gets hers out of a dumpster where the rejects go, Goodwill doesn't even want them.

23. Mine are vastly better
than Mrs Fields'.

Here's the recipe, and pay careful attention to all the details:

Cream together 1 cup Crisco, 1 cup granulated sugar, and 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed.

Add two medium eggs and 2 teaspoons vanilla.

Stir in 2 1/4 cups unbleached white flour, 1/2 teaspoon each of baking powder and baking soda.

Then add 1 package semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Drop, using ordinary teaspoon to judge amount of dough, onto lightly greased cookie sheets and bake at 350 degrees for 11-13 minutes, perhaps slightly longer if your oven needs it. Make sure the rack is at the top position in the oven.

This will give you about three dozen cookies.

This is a recipe from a 1930's cookbook, which accounts for the somewhat odd measurements. I'd been making this recipe for years and it always came out quite good. And then one time I had bought some medium eggs, rather than the extra large or jumbo size. While I was using the eggs I happened to make the chocolate chip cookies, and the day before I baked the cookies I'd made garlic bread to go with spaghetti and meat balls, and so the rack was in the top (broil) position in the oven, and I was too lazy to move it down. The cookies came out a combination of chewy and crunchy that is to die for. I'm so spoiled, I think that once they've cooled down they've gotten stale.

A few other pointers: Use regular Crisco, not butter, not butter-flavored Crisco, and not any other brand of shortening. Use REAL vanilla -- I have some from Mexico. Use real semi-sweet chips. Baker's made the best ones, but they've disappeared from the grocery shelves and I have no idea why. So I use Hershey's these days. I don't sift the flour, but I fluff it up and NEVER pack it into the measuring cup.

I love baking these and it takes me less than an hour to make a batch and I'm slightly famous for making them. I love to bring them to school on test days (I'm a constant student at my local junior college). I claim that's why I get straight A's.

The original recipe is so old that it tells you to chop up a bar of semi-sweet chocolate. And I think that's why the proportions are a bit off, and I know it's why the medium eggs make it better. Back then, eggs were smaller than the large, extra-large, and jumbo ones we can get today. It also reads almost like a high-altitude recipe, and when I lived in Boulder I didn't bother to alter the recipe at all.

19. if baking were part of a talent competition for Presidential candidates
Kerry would be distributing gourmet-quality cookies to the audience while Bush was still trying to find the kitchen!

http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/?040510fa_fact1

"Kerry prided himself on his homemade cookies, and during this period he and a friend, K. Dun Gifford, opened a cookie stand in Quincy Market. They called the business Kilvert and Forbes, after their mothers’ maiden names. Kerry sold his interest years ago, but the cookie emporium still exists, selling adaptations of the Senator’s original recipes. (Chocolate-chocolate-chunk cookies, based on a recipe by Kerry’s mother, remain especially popular.)"
