Bush plans to screen whole US population for mental illness (July)

http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/328/7454/1458

A sweeping mental health initiative will be unveiled by President George W Bush in July. The plan promises to integrate mentally ill patients fully into the community by providing "services in the community, rather than institutions," according to a March 2004 progress report entitled New Freedom Initiative (www.whitehouse.gov/infocus/newfreedom/toc-2004.html). While some praise the plan's goals, others say it protects the profits of drug companies at the expense of the public.

Bush established the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health in April 2002 to conduct a "comprehensive study of the United States mental health service delivery system." The commission issued its recommendations in July 2003. Bush instructed more than 25 federal agencies to develop an implementation plan based on those recommendations.

The commission also recommended "Linkage with treatment and supports" including "state-of-the-art treatments" using "specific medications for specific conditions." The commission commended the Texas Medication Algorithm Project (TMAP) as a "model" medication treatment plan that "illustrates an evidence-based practice that results in better consumer outcomes."

-snip-

But the Texas project, which promotes the use of newer, more expensive antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs, sparked off controversy when Allen Jones, an employee of the Pennsylvania Office of the Inspector General, revealed that key officials with influence over the medication plan in his state received money and perks from drug companies with a stake in the medication algorithm (15 May, p1153). He was sacked this week for speaking to the BMJ and the New York Times.

can everyone say SCAM

what a lovely twofold scam: the drug corps. make mucho money; the examiners make mucho money; and anyone the bushgang doesn't like gets named insane and put on deadening drugs.

US health care is crashing by design. and all we can do is watch.

12. Is there any distopian novel that the BFEE hasn't stolen elements of?
It seems that they see 1984, The Handmaids Tale, Brave New World, etc as "owners" manuals rather than as cautionary tales.

9. I hope we get beyond this and
historians from the future, ( if there is one ), wlll look back on just how far the limits of totalitarian power were stretched - before wiser and saner heads prevailed and stopped them.

We are entering a different kind of statism. Beyond precident.

And how are the cirteria for sanity to be agreed upon and enforced?
LIke his through the looking glass distorted reality when the Chimp says.
" the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health " READ the NEW Slavery Commission on Mind Control "

Freedom is Slavery
Ignorance is Stregnth
War is Peace

Folks we are already there.

14. Let's please not overreact
Nowhere does it say that the entire population will be screened.

"For example, a child whose serious emotional disturbance is identified early will receive care, preventing the potential onset of a co-occurring substance use disorder and breaking a cycle that otherwise can lead to school failure and other problems.

"Quality screening and early intervention will occur in both readily accessible, low-stigma settings, such as primary health care facilities and schools, and in settings in which a high level of risk exists for mental health problems, such as criminal justice, juvenile justice, and child welfare systems. Both children and adults will be screened for mental illnesses during their routine physical exams."

This isn't much different from what happenes now in a lot of cases. If a person is getting standard care, their doctor is aware of all possibilities. Most General Practitioners do a psych rotation and consider the possibility of depression in some cases when making a diagnosis.
I would like to see a thing like this thing headed up and run entirely by the mental health community, however.
