This is a F*cking joke right?
Talk about a spin, stupid assholes:

Representative Charles Rangel (D-NY) intends to introduce legislation this week to bring back mandatory national service in the military -- bring back the draft. How about we tweak that leg just a little to give the bloods and the crips gang members an early out option here in New York. for the felony offenders and/or wannabes -elist or do time in jail. since they feel devoted to the peoples nation and/or the folks nation how about defending the nation that takes care of them? lets just offer that option for all gang menbers of any gang caught doing the drug running and gun running. cause this here United States is the toughest gang in the world. make no mistake. got game? redirect that wasted energy. enlist them street soldiers!! may be they can get the big picture.

4. the point he's making
is that currently, those who decide on war are removed from the actual effects of war.

His bill is co-sponsored by the most liberal members of the House.

5. The laughable part of that
Edited on Mon Jun-21-04 07:02 PM by markses
Is the notion that the United States as a nation "takes care of" those populations, or that those populations owe even the slightest bit of loyalty to the United States. Apparently, the deep irony that people faced with the choice "enlist or go to jail" owe some gratitude or loyalty to a state apparatus that shows them nothing but poverty and imprisonment is lost on this particular dunce of a writer. To quote Malcolm X, "it don't mean you!"

7. If I'm not mistaken, this is pre-Iraq War II news...
...and was a brilliant move by Rangel. I never read the full text of it, but I believe he was forcing the issue of drafting males AND females, as well as making it harder to get deferments. This would make declaring war a much more politically dangerous move for any politician as American sons AND daughters could be coming home in bodybags, and some of them might be the children of sitting Congress-persons. Rangel's proposal makes the draft much more substantial and across-the-board fair. No longer would the well-to-do easily avoid serving their country involuntarily just because they are well-to-do. Now, they'd have to serve alongside us poor slobs from lower- and middle-class America.

If I'm interpreting this correctly, Rangel did this to make the hawks in Washington less trigger-happy.

13. I hope his plan doesn't backfire on him
he's playing with fire...

the first question the press will ask Kerry
is do you support Rangel's bill for the Draft?

If he does..he's in trouble.
If he doesn't...the hawks will call him unpatriotic
and threatening the security of the country.

boom-boom!

I just don't see it as a winner...

22. Unfortunately, there is a key phrase in both bills that will allow...
...the children of the wealthy to avoid any danger of combat:

"To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes."

If they win in November, guess who will decide which kids will be allowed to serve "...a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes."?

Here's the appropriate section:

"SEC. 2. NATIONAL SERVICE OBLIGATION.

(a) OBLIGATION FOR YOUNG PERSONS- It is the obligation of every citizen of the United States, and every other person residing in the United States, who is between the ages of 18 and 26 to perform a period of national service as prescribed in this Act unless exempted under the provisions of this Act.

(b) FORM OF NATIONAL SERVICE- National service under this Act shall be performed either--

(1) as a member of an active or reverse component of the uniformed services; or

(2) in a civilian capacity that, as determined by the President, promotes the national defense, including national or community service and homeland security."

In this case, whoever is SecDef will do the selections on behalf of the "president".

10. The point Rangel is trying to make is that a draft
Edited on Mon Jun-21-04 07:24 PM by Cyrano
will turn the country against anymore of Bush's war(s).

When the brain-dead middle class who are giving BushCo a free ride realize that their own kids might be drafted, they'll think twice.

It's what happened with Vietnam. The country turned against the meaningless deaths of their children (althought those children didn't include Limbaugh, Hannity, Gingrich, O'Reilly, Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Perle, et al.) once they caught on to what was happening.

That's what Rangel is counting on. Bring back the draft and watch how quickly the freepers start turning on BushCo's wars.

it will be simple enough to understand. Burying one's own child has a way of focusing the mind.

27. It's a different generation and they don't remember.
Especially the southerner's who have always paid a greater price in our wars since they enlist at a higher rate than the rest of the country. (Sorry, don't have a statistical site to connect you to. Just going by my personal experiences.)

In any case, too many people just don't get it because as Strother Martin said in "Cool Hand Luke, "Now, what we have here is a failure to commun'cate."

Why should all the front lines be staffed with poor people? Draft the rich kids too - no exemptions for college and no special assignments to the "Champaign Squad".

20. Old news. It's been in Committee since it was introduced 01-07-2003....
<http://www.congress.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c108:H.R.163:>

The same is true of the companion bill in the Senate:

<http://www.congress.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c108:S.89:>

Please note that each bill states the following:

"To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes."

I really don't know what the rant in that guy's posting on Republicans.org is all about. If those bills pass, one can only hope that he or she is within the age range of 18-26, and that his or her draft lottery number is the first one pulled.

24. Here's a 05-01-2004 article on extending the draft age....
<http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/171522_draft01.html>

Excerpt:

"WASHINGTON -- The chief of the Selective Service System has proposed registering women for the military draft and requiring that young Americans regularly inform the government about whether they have training in niche specialties needed in the armed services.

The proposal, which the agency's acting Director Lewis Brodsky presented to senior Pentagon officials just before the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, also seeks to extend the age of draft registration to 34 years old, up from 25.

The Selective Service System plan, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, highlights the extent to which agency officials have planned for an expanded military draft in case the administration and Congress would authorize one in the future."

26. Understand Rangel intentions
In a perfect world it would be a great idea. Make everyone equal in the eyes of a nat'l draft. Small problem:

IT WON'T EVER HAPPEN.

As long as there are rich folks there will be ways for them to tweak the system.

No offense against rich folks(I'd like to be one myself one day). But "as it is, as it will always be".
