Virginia is for Haters, Let the boycott begin
Edited on Thu Jun-24-04 03:19 PM by mitchtv
There is one company-apparel= Jay Crew? , I think Hq'd in Virginia. What can we boycott? The CO boycott was extrmemly successful. ( for those who do not know, VA just passed the most draconian, anti gay, marriage, law in the country. )

1. I had been planning to go with the kids for April vacation,
but instead, I am writing to Mt. Vernon and Williamsburg and telling them why I am not visiting now. If Philip Morris a VA company? If so, should give serious thought to quiting smoking.

3. Why Condemn An Entire State??
Arlington County, Va. is governed by a five-person county board.

One of those 5 persons is an openly gay man.

I'm almost certain that with not too much work, you could still do business with many folks and businesses in Virginia, and still not damage your ideological purity.

4. Why? cause it worked so well in Colorado
Edited on Thu Jun-24-04 09:37 PM by mitchtv
The people of VA must learn that their viciousness has a price on real people, and maybe a price to them(if sucessful). They appear to be in the Bigotry Vanguard.Do you think any gay person not from VA wants to step foot in that bastion of bigotry for tourism , or conventions?

5. The Peope Must Learn!
'The people of VA must learn that their viciousness has a price on real people, and maybe a price to them(if sucessful)."

Yes, and those who stage boycotts must also learn that their actions impose a price on real people, too. Sometimes that price is born by real gay people who have businesses in the states that are being boycotted. Or gay-friendly people who will lose business.

But I guess they don't count.

7. the alternative then , is to do nothing
Edited on Fri Jun-25-04 02:31 PM by mitchtv
Fuck them and the pieces of shit they have representing them. Any gay person should GTFOOT Asap, if possible. Gay people everywhere will give VA the same treatment they gave Coors, Florida OJ(Anita Bryant's employer)and the entire state of Colorado. You describe the age old argument against any boycott. Yes, some get hurt, yes they work.

11. Sorry
But I do not think that any gay person shouldn abandon any state to homophobes.

There are several sources on the net and elsewhere of gay businesses in Virginia.

You seem to like hurting gay people who choose to live in places you deem unacceptable.

15. I believe that most gays in VA will support a boycott.
I'd hate to be in VA depending on out of state gays for an income. I repeat Virginia is for Haters, let the boycott begin.

It is a statewide law, voted on by both houses, is it not?

12. Yep,
but unless it's unanimous in both houses, you must realize that there are some areas of Virginia that don't meet your narrow, pre-conceived notion.

17. narrow and preconceived is Virginias legal opinion of gays
.A boycot is a reaction to a figurative declaration of war on Gays.A boycott can take many ways, I remember answering business reply cards addressed to colorado(during the prop 2 business)with Jesse Helms' and Fallwell's names. I had ten years of my magazine to send. I am looking actively for a similar exercise.

10. I have to disagree.
I am a native born Virginian and have lived here since graduating from college over 30 years ago. Having said that, I ALWAYS vacation out of state and avoid making any discretionary purchases in -state. I would fully support a boycott, and if it hurts me as well as others, well perhaps they will join me in voting the republican bastards out of office!

13. Do You Really Think
that the gay business people of Virginia are going to suddenly vote Republican because YOU decide not to patronize them?

Please.

Duh...

It's a state law.

I will support a boycott.

You can feel free to go there and spend your money. It's your right after all. Use it while you still have them...

I'm in Virginia and I didn't know about this, probably because I'm so focussed on national and international news.

House Bill 751

1. § 20-45.3. Civil unions between persons of same-sex.

A civil union, partnership contract or other arrangement between persons of the same sex purporting to bestow the privileges or obligations of marriage is prohibited. Any such civil union, partnership contract or other arrangement entered into by persons of the same sex in another state or jurisdiction shall be void in all respects in Virginia and any contractual rights created thereby shall be void and unenforceable.

Virginia Is for Lovers. (Some restrictions apply.)

edited to add:
On June 30, 2004, we're asking Virginia to Stand Up for Equality and attend one of the many statewide demonstrations supporting the LGBT community's civil rights. http://standupforequality.org/

Go Ahead and boycott VA!!!

For those in VA, go ahead and support LGBTQ owned buisnesses.

I think it is about time for me to pack up my stuff and head out west to CA. Since the four years I have been here I cannot believe just how many conservative idiots live here.

I really hope you get away from those dreadful conservatives. Tho it is not perfect, Calif is one place a gay can live a fairly trouble free life. I am in Palm Springs, the latest center of Gay migration. It is freeper land, but is changing quickly. Gays now control city council and have elected the country's first openly gay black man as mayor. Next step is to replace our local puke assembly person, and finally Mary Bono. Regards to the gays in Freeperville.
