Gore mentioned the Daily Show in today's speech!
From his speech:

To take the most recent example, Vice President Cheney was clearly ready to do battle with the news media when he went on CNBC earlier this week to attack news coverage of the 9/11 commission's conclusion that Iraq did not work with al-Qaida. He lashed out at the New York Times for having the nerve to print a headline saying the 9/11 commission "finds no Qaeda-Iraq Tie" -- a clear statement of the obvious -- and said there is no "fundamental split here now between what the president said and what the commission said." He tried to deny that he had personally been responsible for helping to create the false impression of linkage between al-Qaida and Iraq.

Ironically, his interview ended up being fodder for "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart." Stewart played Cheney's outright denial that he had ever said that representatives of al-Qaida and Iraqi intelligence met in Prague. Then Stewart froze Cheney's image and played the exact video clip in which Cheney had indeed directly claimed linkage between the two, catching him on videotape in a lie. At that point Stewart said, addressing himself to Cheney's frozen image on the television screen, "It's my duty to inform you that your pants are on fire."

Great speech all should read it, I love it when our politicians bring up the founding fathers and remind the neo-cons that they are all actually non-fascists.

2. It Is a Sad and Pointed Commentary
on our times when Gore has to cite the amazing journalistic prowess of The Daily Show instead of CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, Washington Post, New York Times, USA Today, or the Associated Press.

It's unfortunate that Jon Stewart has to be the best journalist in this country, when it's not even his job title.

3. I wish he'd explicitly stated what he's implying:

That we have to rely on a satirist to call out those in power the way our journalists used to.

But I suppose he got his point across pretty well anyway.

5. Two "real" new shows followed Stewarts lead and used those clips
on their shows the next day.

Why the hell couldn't they do that on their own? Un-frickin-believable.

7. Honestly? I bet they never thought to
Calling a President/Vice-President a liar is a big deal, even when the evidence is staring you in the face. Running the clips though, allows them to let the audience draw their own conclusions. Maybe we'll see more of this, what's that word again... reporting.

10. They don't have to say his pants are on fire, just show the clips that
expose the blatant contradictions - people can label it whatever they want.

8. Gore calls bush a liar too
It's a great speech. I would like to see it on mainstream TV. The country deserves to hear it. After all he was the person the majority voted for.
