"Michael Moore Is a Big Fat Stupid White Man''
June 25, 2004  |  LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Michael Moore's critics are turning up the temperature with a book and documentary intended to debunk his methods as the filmmaker's "Fahrenheit 9/11'' hits theaters.

Since his first movie, 1989's "Roger & Me,'' Moore has been accused of playing loose with the facts and presenting a distorted version of the truth. The criticism, usually in newspaper and magazine articles or on anti-Moore Web sites, has failed to click with his millions of fans, who pushed the Academy Award-winning "Bowling for Columbine'' to a $21.6 million box-office pay day and put Moore's last two books on the best-seller lists.

Moore's opposition has a higher profile this time as "Fahrenheit 9/11,'' his assault on President Bush's actions regarding the Sept. 11 attacks, debuts nationwide Friday.

On Tuesday, David T. Hardy and Jason Clarke will publish "Michael Moore Is a Big Fat Stupid White Man,'' in which the authors accuse Moore of "serial mendacity.'' The book is published by Regan Books, which also printed Moore's ``Stupid White Men.''

14. that's the difference

Moore appropriating Fahrenheit from Bradbury's book title ( actually he said a fan used the term in an e-mail and he loved it ) and attaching it to 9/11 is brilliant and thoughtful in the fact that it has an "oh yeah! cool!" meaning. The temperature at which freedom burns is a hell of a lot more intelligent than "Michael Moore is a Stupid Fat White Man."

Oh god, and I heard some talking head last night cutting down F9/11 for the most asinine reasons. The only one I remember is that he said he just had to apologize to Ray Bradbury. Oh, poor, poor, Ray Bradbury. I've read on the DU that his book is actually selling again because of Moore's movie. Well, I'll apologize to Ray Bradbury too. I'm sorry Ray, that the temperature at which freedom burns is a lot more catchy title than the temperature at which paper burns.

Not knocking RB's Sci-Fi writing. He's one of the best. It's just so wimpy of the Repugs to use him as one of the main reasons to blast F/911 which Moore has said over and over again IS a partisan film.

11. $21.6 million is DOMESTIC only. It pulled in $58 M worldwide
in addition to the domestic box office, IIRC. Not sure if that includes rentals as well.

Let 'em keep Mike's name prominent in people's minds. 'preciate it!

13. You should read the "good review" about the movie
From Fresno Bee (http://www.fresnobee.com/lifestyle/movies/story/8759581p-9639586c.html)

"'Fahrenheit 9/11," the latest documentary by trollish Oscar-winning producer Michael Moore. . ."

"Moore presents his message in a comical and touching manner. The scruffy filmmaker has a great knack for knowing just how far to go with poking fun at a subject before he takes a left turn into the deeply dramatic."

Trollish and scruffy. Funny, I don't remember anyone taking a poke at Steven Speilberg for being scruffy or Ron Howard for being bald. . .

all the way to the bank.

I met him once, by the way, at a birthday party for animator Bill Plympton. He and his wife were very charming (not a word often associated with the man, but he was!) and engaged my brother and me for about a half an hour (this was when his TV Nation was still on the air). He's really smart and funny and very down to earth--just like on television. So what if he's big and fat?

Edited to correct spelling of Plympton's name.

20. I LOVE Bill Plympton!
That Plymptoon about quitting smoking is still hilarious-- years after I first saw it.

The guy punching himself in the face kills me. And the sumo warrior landing on the guy is hysterical!
