Can the FEC ban ads for F9/11???
http://www.thehill.com/news/062404/moore.aspx

‘Fahrenheit 9/11’ ban?
Ads for Moore’s movie could be stopped on July 30
By Alexander Bolton

Michael Moore may be prevented from advertising his controversial new movie, “Fahrenheit 9/11,” on television or radio after July 30 if the Federal Election Commission (FEC) today accepts the legal advice of its general counsel.

At the same time, a Republican-allied 527 soft-money group is preparing to file a complaint against Moore’s film with the FEC for violating campaign-finance law.

In a draft advisory opinion placed on the FEC’s agenda for today’s meeting, the agency’s general counsel states that political documentary filmmakers may not air television or radio ads referring to federal candidates within 30 days of a primary election or 60 days of a general election.

The opinion is generated under the new McCain-Feingold campaign-finance law, which prohibits corporate-funded ads that identify a federal candidate before a primary or general election.

...

:wtf:

1. this was talked about yesterday...
... and the FEC punted the issue, and basically said they don't want to hear these arguments. This on a different documentary about the Bill of Rights that the neocons were trying to torpedo.

2. Apnu is correct, additionally . . .
All that would be required is a new ad that doesn't mention Bush by name, or show his picture and there would be no legal basis to bar the ads.

3. OK, but what studio shows ads for its films, a month after they open?
I don't see how this can hurt F911 in any way... in fact, Moore insisted on "The Daily Show" last night that he hopes they continue to pull this kind of crap, because inevitably, it just draws more attention, and ticket buyers, to his film.

Bring it on, I say.

5. I'll say it again
We should rub Buddha's belly and hope like hell these morans try and try to censor Moore and his movie. The bright light of truth will shine on their anti-free speech asses. And hopefully sanitize the body politic of these nazi cockroaches.

4. Is there anywhere in the film or the advertisemnet for the film that
advocates for Kerry? If not it is not a political ad. It is not against any campaign law to discuss in any manner the current pResident of the USA. To be a campaign ad it has to advocate for a certain candidate not just disparage the current administration. Anybody has the right (so far) to say what you wish about any government official.

Are they trying to make it against the law to critizice Bush?

Didn't Moore support Nader in 2000? Wouldn't republicans encourage democrats to split?
