F9/11. A report from Bush country (aka Dallas, Tx.)
My brother and I just attended F9/11 at the Mesquite 30 cinema, which is a suburb of Dallas. We attended the first showing at 10:10 am. Needless to say, we didn't know what to expect.

First and foremost, there were probably no more than 50 in the theatre. One thing was for sure, the audience did not have a freeper in sight. There was a police officer sitting in back. My brother was a little paranoid, but I stated that maybe he was there in case some freepers in the house might try to start a commotion.

We laughed, we cried. An eccentric older man a few roles in front kept yelling "Hitler" when Georgie appeared on the screen. He was wonderful. But the most moving part was when it showed American soldiers back from Iraq in group counseling and one stated (paraphrased), "I used to be a Republican. But now, I will support and work for the Democratic party." At which point, the whole theatre applauded.

When the movie was over, one nice woman commented that the movie should be required viewing for all Americans. Another wonderful woman was at the exit passing out fliers from moveon.org. I shook her hand and thanked her for the wonderful work they were doing.

All in all, it was great not to feel alone. In this part of the world, I feel like a lone voice. It was good to be amongst comrades who feel the same way that I do. And above all, DON'T MISS THIS MOVIE.

I should be seeing it in tonight... bringing voter registration forms along to offer to anyone who needs one. This will be in a mixed-income area in Dallas, so I wonder if it'll be as peaceful.

Hmmmm... flyers... :)

4. I talked to guest relations at Dallas theaters
just this morning. They all have a security guard posted at the door because the wingers are advocating buying a ticket for one movie and sneaking into F911 - most likely to disrupt it.

So, I'm taking 2 travel packs of tissue tonight. Will that be enough?

6. Gin - your warning to theatres must have worked
A young man checked all tickets before entering.

Bring tissue. The mother who lost her son is moving. And of course, the carnage and dead and wounded children in Iraq - MY GOD.

11. I'm glad
I felt sorry for the last woman I talked with (the Grapevine theatre I think - or maybe it was Mesquite - I called them all). She sounded like she had worked a full day already and more. I told her I was worried that teenagers would sneak in and the theater would get in a lot of trouble. She said they got a warning about a week ago from corporate, but my call was the first time that she heard of an actual threat of theater jumping.

Maybe I'll take more than 2 packs. Thanks.

12. I totally agree
I saw it this morning as well, and I think that ALL Americans should have to see the horrible images of burned, maimed and killed Iraqi children. This is what has been done in our names, and we should all have to face up to it - especially the Bush supporters.

Incredible film. I'm still digesting it, and probably will for some time to come.

20. Gin, the 7:35 and 9:35 at the Magnolia are both sold out!!
I pity the idiot freeper that tries to bust in at the 7:35 showing, it would be a very bad move on their part, don't you think? (Check your pm).

What theaters are you Dallas DU'ers going to be going to?

We have a group of 10 for the 7:35 at the Magnolia.

There's no public right of way at the Magnolia, so protesters could conceivably be arrested for trespassing. :)

5. I know how you feel. I'm in Bush country, too. I'm going tomorrow.
Surprisingly, a number of theatres are showing this movie in your area (Dallas and suburbs....I know 'cause I live in the area). And they are showing the film on more than one screen in some of those theatres. It's remarkable. And there are several matinees on each screen daily. So hopefully none of hte showings will be jam packed.

I'm going tomorrow w/a small group of friends. No Repubs better try to stand in our way, let me tell ya. "Don't mess with Texas....Democrats."

8. Yes. Bring tissue, too. But also be prepared to laugh.
One big roller-coaster ride. I'm glad the metroplex is showing this in several venues.

I especially hope those fence sitters will go to the movie. It will definitely sway them away from Bush, in my honest opinion.

I felt like jumping through the screen and attacking her I was so pissed off!

10. The Future Is Bright...
that we will have to wear shades! Your post along with it's observations is the hope and the future of the restoration of what was once America. As a people we have to come together and bring back the awesome pride of being an American. All those who oppose this approach I suggest we put them in camps ("Riot In The Streets") where they would receive massive quantities of LSD, so they may remove from themselves the mind altering experience of fascism. (pun intended)

23. The 8:00 PM showing at the Angelika in Plano
I'll be there with my 16 year old son, who is more excited about this than he was about the Rush concert on Wednseday night. And that's saying something.

Very interested to see how big and what kind of crowd will be there, as well as if there will be any disruptions. Plano is VERY conservative, and this brand new high end art house theatre is in a very hoity toity shopping center. Should, no, it will be interesting.

Also, my 14 year old daughter with a group of her friends will see it this weekend. I may have to go with them because of the R rating but that's OK.

25. I live in Dallas area

and our whole family from 80-year old grandmother to 19-year old son will be going together this weekend. This article from WFAA website:

'Fahrenheit 9/11' a hot flick in Dallas
01:18 PM CDT on Friday, June 25, 2004

BY APRIL KINSER / WFAA.com

Dallas may be deep into Bush Country, but Fahrenheit 9/11, the controversial documentary intended to drive the president from office, still attracted hundreds of moviegoers Friday to the film’s opening.

The documentary questioning President Bush’s actions before and after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks brought filmmaker Michael Moore’s ardent supporters in droves to select theaters locally and across the country. The film looks at the relationship between the Bush and Bin Laden families and apparent failures of the president’s handling of terrorism. It also raises questions about the U.S. war with Iraq.

“I’ve been a Michael Moore fan for a while and I’m very liberal so I’ve been anticipating this. I hope this influences the way people vote in the coming election,” Chris Fox of Dallas said before entering a midday showing at the Magnolia Theater. “But you never know how people will react.”

Moore had been best known for his documentaries Roger and Me, which showcased his pursuit of General Motors CEO Roger Smith, and the 2003 Academy Award-winning Bowling for Columbine, which criticized handgun laws in America.

29. Got a ticket for 7pm showing in Lubbock tonight
reportedly sold-out yesterday but a friend kindly gave me one of the block he bought. There are "rumors" of "trouble" that are vague and who knows---the epicenter of Bush* blind support is right here---I'm heading over there early so I'll report on what goes on in our little corner of the paradise that is the south plains....

30. I went to the 11:20 showing in Grapevine, TX
a suburb of Dallas/Ft. Worth. It was over 1/2 full. The 7 and 10 pm showings (in a huge theatre) sold out so they added an extra theatre for both times.

I cried harder in that movie than I have in a film in 20 years. The audience was wonderful, no disrupters.

32. There was a US Navy sailor in front of me in my theater
I went to see the movie in a suburb in New York City today. The theater was packed, I was surprised it was so packed. I had to sit near the front since so many seats were taken. In the next row up, two seats to my left was a US Navy sailor in dress uniform waiting for the movie to start. I was wondering what he was thinking of the whole thing.

My brother went to Iraq and came back. He says it is different over there than it is on television. I haven't really talked to him much about what he thinks of it all though because I am so against it I don't want to get into a family argument. He was called to go and was neither super gung-ho about the whole thing, nor has he said anything against it. We talked about what his experience was like but not whether the war in general was a good idea or not.

I liked one of the messages in the movie that the poor and working class people of the US are the ones who are always first in line to sacrifice for the US, while the idle classers who are unaffected by war (aside from the profits they might make) are the ones who decide when to go to war. Working people in the US need to assert themselves in their workplaces with good rank-and-file unions and in government with good bottom up political parties in my opinion.
