1. Whatever God it is, no one voted for it

I think that if Bush intends to take orders from God in his second term, he needs to put God's name on the ballot this November. Then we can at least be voting for or against the guy who calls the shots.

when bush says GOD talks to him. If he said that the easter bunny spoke to him, or his toaster spoke to him, he would be locked up. Why is it OK to hear voices if they're from an alleged deity?

Great question and nice list!

But by whatever name, the "god" he hears is a symptom of the bicameral mind: pre-conscious obedience to inner voices by the reptilian part of the triune brain. It's very human, but not a conscious choice or a sign of a healthy mind. More like that of a stroke, alzheimer's or head-injury victim, or some vulgar pig-boy oxycontin, cocaine or alcohol abuser.

Becoming "born again", a Moonie, or succumbing to other types of cult indoctrination is, IMHO, a way to resolve the stress of the paradoxes inherent in being a conscious human, once and for all short of suicide. True belief gets rid of conflicting voices when the gods quarrel between the ears, all too often resulting in torture and death for others.

9. Oy! Can't remember

the name of the book on the emergence of human consciousness, but it explains the notion of pantheons as being a result of just the phenomenon you describe--"voices" in the head not integrated into an individual, self-conscious "I" and thus attributed to "gods" The early human brain was structured this way but seems to have made a jump in the very recent past (just a few thousand years).

Maybe it was in "The User Illusion" but I could be wrong.
