"Unpatriotic" and "don't support the troops" are just idiotic catch phrases that let them stop thinking. If you ask them what the qualities are of a "patriot" they get a deer in the headlights look, and try to rattle off some poorly thought out characteristics the anybody can tear apart.
The nature of the enemy is ignorance, and an aversion to critical thinking. Exploit it.

6. I never wanted this bollocks war in the first place... |
|
We need our troops there to clean up the mess they were told to make. We are responsible. To pull them out is like a man who callously rapes a woman, impregnates her, leaves her battered, and never takes responsibility for his own actions. Sorry, but to pull them all out now would be a TREMENDOUS insult that would damage our reputation even more so, hard to believe as that is - * has already destroyed a lot of bridges and good will given to us after he allowed 9/11 to occur.
With the UN in control, Iraq stands a better chance, though it's sadly quite clear that the freeper phrase "The UN is irrelevant and weak" has actual relevance behind it. It's no wonder we're the nation getting away with our mad cowboy disease* in full control of things...

It has cut my heart in half, I want this war for oil to end but I don't know how to tell anyone it was all for oil and to enrich the Bush family. I think it comes down to who wants to be the last person to die for the rich. That is it for me. I have lost no family members so far and that means I know nothing about pain. I understand that, I just want it to end.

8. This is an old, common ploy to get others to go along w/the crowd. |
|
Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 08:17 PM by TexasSissy
Note the following:
"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to greater danger. It works the same in every country ."
Who said that? Hermann Goering at the Neuremburg trials after WWII.
I do not say this to compare our leaders to the Nazis, but rather to point out that this is an apparently old, common ploy used by those in power to get those who disagree to go along w/the crowd. Thought you maybe could use the quote. Look it up on the Internet if you want to be able to quote it more directly. There are a lot of sources.

27. You wanna tell me I don't love my country? |
|
Go for it. My response always has been and always will be that "This nation was founded by political dissidents. Speaking out when I disagree with policy is something I do because I hold with the ideals of those who came before me."
If I REALLY want to piss in their Wheaties, I continue with, "How dare you or ANYONE tell me that I am less of a patriot for honoring every man or woman who has died in defense of the freedoms we hold dear--including that of Free Speech!"
I'm sorry--If they are stupid enough to get in my face I'll be delighted to give them an education on WHAT exactly the the framers had in mind when they drafted the Constitution. Plus, IMO, the best way to honor our troops is to respect the ideals they fight in defense of, and to recognize the huge sacrifice they and those who love them make on our behalf. We owe it to them to not treat them like cannon fodder.
Seems to me, that most of the idjuts turn real green around the time I launch into a lecture on the idea that we honor our fallen best by living the ideals they fought for...
BTW, southernleftylady, welcome to DU!

32. ALL True Patriots should see F911... |
|
I am still a relative newbie - can't start my own post yet, so I'm going to tuck a few other points into this one...
My wife and I (as guests of my daugther and her friend) saw F911 in Durham NC last evening. One overriding impression - Michael Moore loves our country, and this is an extremely patriotic film. Those of us who are truly disgusted with the current administration are the real Patriots...we should all be confident in this.
Three other points really stood out for us last night. The extremely effective use of fear over the last three years, the inexplicable effectiveness of repetition of lies to embed them into the sad majority of our country's so-called Minds, and the incredible failure of our media to tell the truth. Boggles the mind....
