Latest dittohead rationale for war dead |
|
One of my dittohead friends was recently whining about how little support the American people had for the war and noted that 40,000 people died on the roads every year and the number dying in Iraq was a lot less.
Now dittohead John is actually highly educated and served in the rear in Vietnam. A trial lawyer friend of mine. But when I pointed out to him that his was a false analogy he was just without words. People know the risks when they get in the car and they do so for their own reasons. We were told that Iraq was a giant WMD factory and we would be attacked at any time and Iraq was Al Queda etc. Well no WMD have been found in Iraq, not even salesmen's samples from Halliburton or Carlylse, fewer Al Queda links have been found in Iraq than in Bush's own family and cabinet. The only thing working in Iraq right now is the oil: electricity, water, sewage is still out. This war is really about oil, and no wonder the American people don't want it, as we can buy the million barrels a day coming out of Iraq now from somewhere else without the trillion dollar premium and several hundred American dead and tens of thousands of Iraqi dead. Love it when they just shut up.

1. That's a Rush justification |
|
He's been saying that for at least a couple of months now. Very sad, considering he never has spent any time in the military, due to his cystic ass and all.

3. What a logical rationale (sarcasm) |
|
Let's go to war with some other 3rd world country with a failing economy because hey, more people die due to car accidents then people who are going to die in the war.

5. I've heard something like this |
|
"You are more likely to die in a car crash if you go driving right now than you are if you went to Iraq and went on a patrol."
Excuse me?
I have been driving for six years now, and I am still alive.
But I would wager that if I were to enlist and go on patrol in Iraq, I would be dead within two months.

THere are at least 50 million drivers and thats probably an underestimate.
There are only a few thousand troops over in Iraq 100,000?
The death rates dont compare.

18. I'd say more than half of the US drives. |
|
Edited on Sat Aug-16-03 05:56 PM by TahitiNut
That'd be about 140 million people. There're about 150,000 ground troops in Iraq, and that'd be a high estimate, I think. Lessee... (back of the envelope) ... about 300 deaths from service-related causes in Iraq in less than 6 months gives us 600/150,000 or about 0.4% annual death rate. For driving, we have about 40,000/140,000,000, which is a death rate 14 times as large.
So, it'd be quite reasonable to say that military personnel are dying in Iraq more than 10 times faster than if they were (drunk?) driving in the US, IMHO. (Us analytical-types say "that's an order of magnitude greater.")
Stated another way, if drivers were dying at the same rate as military personnel in Iraq, we'd have more than 400,000 highway deaths per year.
(And those are, pardon the expression, very conservative estimates, IMHO.)
Oops! Correction ... misplaced decimal.

20. There are more like 140 million drivers... |
|
... and if the death rate among that group were equivalent to that of the 140,000 US troops in the Middle East, the death rate among drivers would be, in only five months, approximately 300,000. The annual rate of deaths of drivers, at the rate that soldiers only are killed in Iraq, would be about 720,000. Add in Iraq civilians and the rate would be in the several million.
Nor should there be any notion that those deaths are legitimate simply because they are numerically lower than automobile accident deaths. Those deaths, of both soldiers and civilians, were and continue to be unnecessary, because the war itself was unnecessary.

13. why worry about terrorism? Only 3000 dead on 9/11 |
|
Your odds of getting killed by a terrorist are probably less than of slipping in the shower and cracking your head open and dying.

19. damned good point... you're over 10 times more likely... |
|
to die in a car accident than in a terrorist attack..
so, why are we spending billions on 'homeland' security? Wouldn't it be better to spend that money on highway safety? It would save so many more lives!

15. It's about a lot of things |
|
Not so much oil, but the American companies that'll be contracted to harvest it.
It's about setting up our own military position in the Middle East, as evidenced by their pull-out of Saudi Arabia.
It's about the neocon master plan and the itch ("finishing the job in Iraq") that they couldn't wait to scratch, once 9/11 gave them what they thought was an excuse.
And of course, it's about a sad, pathetic little boy doing what he thinks will finally make his daddy proud. Tragically, even Daddy thought it was a dumb idea.
