5. Oh, phooey.
Dale Jr. is the most popular driver in NASCAR. He probably always will be. He can say whatever he wants.

Having said that, NASCAR's demographics are roughly the same as the ones the military recruiters play to. There are a lot of good people that like NASCAR, and Jr. no doubt grew up Blue Collar.

The only thing that keeps those people from voting Dem are social issues. Red herring issues, like gay marriage, abortion, and sex are all personal issues, which the government has no business regulating whatsoever.

Take them off the table and let people make up their own minds about them.

10. Have to say this...
husband and many, many friends are bankers in a big way. They are NASCAR fans. Blue or white collar they don't give a damn. Some love *, most hate him (I don't use that word hate lightly cause it's not in me to hate). But love to see them interact. No converts yet but there is still time.

18. Don't forget guns and the environment
Our bull headed agenda to pass gun control legislation that doesn't work and is a pain in the ass, is big issue with Nascar families.

So are petty little environmental rules that do little to improve the environment but piss off a lot of natural Dem voters.

We are our own worst enemies.

21. I'll have to agree
We need to get serious and form policies that do work. Then, we take them to the people in town halls and explain them as best we can. This approach takes a long time, but it would pay off.

We need to fix the education system first. Expanded minds are necessary to understand some of these issues.

27. Yes, and we need to be a little humble about knowing for sure what works
Edited on Sun Jun-27-04 10:12 PM by hansolsen
Environmental science is like all science -- today's theories are only as good as the next empirical test.

Today's most enlightened forest management theory will not be the same theory most environmentalists swear is the right one 20 years from now.

That is not a reason to back off, knuckle under, and give up. But it is a reason to keep a weather eye on every environmental policy we implement, know its economic cost in the near term, and its political cost in the long term.

Enviromentalists need more than a back pack and a compass. We also need a calculator and a political game plan.

22. Hmmm....petty little environmental rules?
Edited on Sun Jun-27-04 09:35 PM by Jen6

What, like the ones that keep you and yours from dying of cancer? Do YOU really want a toxic waste dump in your backyard? Are a few extra pennies for stockholders worth giving your kid a violent case of asthma? How about destroying the planet?

Frankly, what pisses me off most is that the populace is so fucking brainwashed and uneducated that they don't understand that their health and the future of existence of life on earth is being sold BY BOTH PARTIES for short term profits that only end up in the pockets of the uber-rich. I've never known any educated Dem who would honestly say any current environmental laws are "petty."

25. Peace, friend -- I am on your side, just careful, that's all
I've long said there are two kinds of environmentalists -- macro and micro, or telescope vs microscope, if you prefer.

The macro environmentalists like Teddy Roosevelt set aside huge national parks but then went in and shot one of every animal in the park. Or consider Edward Abbey who drove to enviromental meetings to talk about blowing up Glen Canyon Dam, riding in his old pickup truck drinking beer and throwing the cans out the window.

The micro environmentalist are the ones who make rules about the cans and the Spotted Owl. I call them "petty", because in many cases they are not fundamental rules, they are personal preferences.

For example, in the BWCAW wilderness area in my back yard, it is a good idea to set the million acres aside as a true wilderness park and to ban cans and bottles, for example, but it may be a stretch to limit party size, and prohibit stacked logs at a campsite.

My contention is that too many personal preference rules are creating controversy that has low environmental payback and high costs in lost voter support for the macro environmental policies that are truly important.

Every environmental policy isn't created equal. We need need to learn where and when to pick our battles, or we endanger the war.

29. He's perceived as a "Daddies boy" and a dirty driver

All the qualities of George Bush.

http://www.skippysg.com/antigordon.html

The fact that he's from north of the Mason-Dixon line probably doesn't help. Though, he's popular here in Indiana where he was spawned. ;-)

32. Well, aren't they all?
Dale Earnhardt Sr. had a daddy (Ralph) who was a driver. And #3 Dale was a pretty aggressive driver.

But he was considered the messiah of NASCAR.

Hell, lots of NASCAR drivers seem to have family connections. Look at the Petty's.

41. That's the beauty of it....
Dale Jr is the most popular driver in NASCAR today and most of his fans are young people. When I heard what he said I was proud of the kid. Who knows how many of his fans will be influenced by his words but his endorsement of F911 was huge IMHO.

I'm a NASCAR fan and I'm a lifelong Democrat. Go figure! :)

Browsing that website, Freerepublic does more harm than any kind of good for their efforts. What a band of freaks.

20. I'm wondering ...
maybe Earnhardt's people shut it down.

I went to Earnhardt's website, wrote him and said he rocked and is a true patriot, but he ought to see what a bunch of whacknuts were saying about him --- and I sent the link to the thread.

And I'm sure I'm not the only one who did (the Great Minds Think Alike Hypothesis :D ).

So ... maybe Earnhardt's people saw it and gave them a piece of their own stuff! LOL!!! :D

30. We need to keep the story alive
And get it into a real news story.

As long as it remains "I heard it during the race," people will dismiss it as a rumor.

Many radio stations do a NASCAR call in show (at least down here in South Carolina)

Call in and mention Dale Jr - F911. Maybe one of the NASCAR reporters will mention it.

34. Two reasons why the thread was pulled...
... first, Atrios posted it on his high traffic blog and the posts which followed on his comment thread were overwhelming; along with being clever, snarky, and highly critical of the collective freeper intelligence. I'm sure the reference URLs into freeperville from that site caused them no small amount of anxiety.

Second, a well known behaviour of cockroaches is to run and hide when the light of day is shown upon them.
