My 22 year old son just watched 9/11 |
|
He & his girlfriend were totally knocked out!! This is in Johnson County, Kansas. and he said the theatre was sold out still. I raised this boy right, but he still had his doubts about what was really going on, as far as the Bush administration. His first vote was for the 2000 presidency. He was registered online as a Democrat, as he wanted, and when the form came in the mail for him to sign, he did, returned it and it kept coming back, until I had to take him to the registration office and physically make them register him as a Democrat. Still, he didn't believe half the things I told him about the present administration until tonight, when he saw the movie.

2. Your son has a better head on his shoulders than my 48 year old father |
|
Edited on Sun Jun-27-04 11:22 PM by Cousinit13
I made my dad see it today and he still wasn't convinced. I don't know what to tell him anymore...I fear that he is a lost cause. Either that or he is just too ashamed to admit that supporting the war and * was a mistake. Thats what I would like to believe anyway, who the hell knows who he is going to vote for and to be honest I'd rather not know, worst case scenario, our votes will cancel each other out. But we live in NJ so it shouldn't be a problem anyway.
But what gets me most about my dad, is that he clams that he's not a republican and isn't registered for any party, but his views clearly echo the Republicans. I wish that he would just admit it but he won't. I keep telling him, that a single father with a daughter in college making his salary has no business voting Republican. but he always brushes me off by saying that Dems only help the poor on welfare and not the middle class. I tell him that his tax bracket is alot closer to those on welfare than Kennith Lay and the Dems want to help the middle class in a multitude of ways, but he won't listen. Oh well I've done all that I can do...

7. Your dad just got brainwashed by the Repubs |
|
Ronald Reagan kept talking about welfare queens riding in cadillacs and some people believed it. Those same people wanted to identify with the wealthy, and, of course, in the U.S., we do not want to give up the American dream that one day we may be the ones who are super wealthy.
I think Kerry is right to focus on the middle class because that is where most people are.

9. Yes, he does worship St. Ronnie |
|
he identifies the 80's as a time when he was making a lot of money. Since then, the newspaper that he works for has changed ownersip and never treated the workers very fairly,(pay, etc) and is very bitter about that. I think that has a lot to do with his line of thinking.

24. I was "outsourced" in the 80's |
|
Worked for Keds shoes, they were outsourcing manufacturing and downsizing everything else way back then. And busting unions and writing employees out of union contracts, etc. What happened to me then is happening to your dad now. I didn't make money in the 80's. It's also one reason I've never been a fan of "St. Ronnie". I got my taste of union busting and the global economy very early. Remind him, he knows. It's probably just that he bought into the "unions are bad for business" and is having a tough time admitting that it was all wrong.

The situation is similart to many across the nation. And that's why your Dad needs you.
People think and act based on the information they pick up from Corporate McMedia. Many if not most of the people they associate with also populate the same information environment. The TV, newspapers and radio are not in the business of informing the electorate about what the Bush Organized Crime Family are about.
Don't give up helping your dad wake up. Once he understands, he'll thank you.

It is those who are "on the fence" regarding how destructive or effective Bush is and has been that will make the difference in the November election, imo. I hope he spreads his message far and wide to his peers.

The truth about the Little Turd from Crawford shines through in that film. May all people who see it come away with a new, um, appreciation and understanding for the resident.
Your son is very young. He does not remember Tricky Dick Skinose or J Edgar Ford. Carter and Pruneface and Bush 1 may not be much more than memories.
You, like me, lived through those administrations which were nothing more than criminal enterprises (with the exception of Carter -- who told the truth and was a virtuous man and look where it got him) in the service of the world's rich and powerful.
Now that there's a film to help recap a few hundred books, young people can catch up on a bit of important history. What's more, they may want to read up on some things for more detail. Things we know that happened, mwdem! We can't forget.

To me, Michael Moore didn't uncover and expose anything that wasn't already known, it's that he put it all together in a two hour package that the general public can understand. He presents the "dots" and lets the viewer connect them. The thing that really impressed me was that he kept hitting home the point about what a tragedy it is to send our young people into an unjust war. The film is certainly anti-Bush, but it's just as much anti-war.

My daughter hasn't seen the film yet. I'm not sure she will--she didn't commit. She already served in Gulf I. Her father, in whose town she resides, is a rabid repubilican and clinton hater. She listens to me, but like your son, she kind of thinks I'm off my rocker. She doesn't say it in so many words, but she intimates it. She's a wonderful young woman but I desperately want her to get some balance in her political views. I told her I'd pay her way....we shall see what happens. We have a great relationship otherwise and call each other often.
I took my 16 yo grandson to see the film. The "political" aspects of it were a bit over his head but he did say that certain scenes were indelibly marked in his mind. The scenes of the burned bodies on the bridge, the bombings of Iraq, and the Twin towers. He also picked up on the sneaky recruiting techniques of the Marines there... He probably absorbed more than he is saying. Teens can sometimes be too reticent to say what they really think.
So, bravo to both your young ones for at least checking out the film.

these younger generations are tough.. they don't really want to agree with you. I believe this film is a breath of fresh air in this respect. If they can see it for themselves. it can open new doors.

Not all the youth, thank goodness, is this myopic. I think it's our consumer culture or something. Some just go about their daily lives la la la la al playing their tunes and doing their thing...all the really bad stuff is just on TV or far far away.
They just CAN'T conceive of a dirty rotten government right under their noses. We've been inundated with GOD BLESS AMERICA for decades so it's probably logical that the young (and often the aged) just go along and trust because they ...well...are brainwashed; I don't know how else to put it. The truth would hurt too much. We have to keep at those that are too scared or too skeptical to SEE. It's for their sake afterall.

think about it...when we were they're age, did we have a Michael Moore? At least, my son now can "kinda" believe me, and he will have some kind of public discourse with his peers, hopefully swaying them to the truth about out so-called government.

a verrrry scary place. I moved here about 6 years ago from S. Jersey. I now live in Overland Park, Ks. I wish the tide is turning here, but I don't see how. I know there are a few voices in the wilderness, thanks to Mopaul, but it is so disheartening living here in a progressive void. We are, basically, a suburb of Kansas City gone wrong.

The Kansas side is as smooth as silk compared to the MO side. You can tell when you have entered MO just by how the roads are.
I grew up in Kansas and I know what it is like to be a liberal there. Not fun but the roads are for the most part better than in nearby MO.
Unfortunatly the area of MO that I am in is not that much diferent than most of KS. :(
