5. it's near Chicago
WGN called USGS

check Illinois, or whatever

lasted about five seconds

newsguy called him mom, who felt it; said it was like a dryer offcenter

that was it

I felt one here when they had a shake at New Madrid in the early 70s

rattled the whole house for about a half minute

I thought it was a bigass freight train.... tracks were half mile away

I live in the Bay Area of California - we rely on quakes to stir our coffee.

Best of luck - still not sure it was a quake though. The USGS still doesn't have anything. Could there have been an explosion or something?

15. Well, Palatine is waaaay North of us.
And people North of Chicago felt it too. I'm 60 miles South of Chicago. I suppose it could have been a VERY HUGE explosion, but that would have been reported on the news. I don't think I would have felt an explosion if it happened 60 miles North of here.

That kind of behavior can get you hurt around here. I'm on the wrong side of Western Ave, dontcha know! Earthquakes are the least of my nightly worries. ;-)

Hey, how come you haven't been at any of the Chicago DU gatherings? We're not that scary, I swear! Though, we are due for another one pretty soon, and judging from the latest Chicago related threads, it better be well attended!

26. it made the Mississippi run BACKWARD!
pretty sure it was the biggest in recorded US history

somebody wrote fairly interesting scifi book about a very large EQ centered around St. Louis a few years ago

pretty 'accurate', geologically speaking.....cool near-end-of-world-societal breakdown scenario

author created a giant waterfall in the Mississippi, among other things

huge nuclear spill at Paducah Ky, where they have something going on there

also a problem in Tennessee, where they have the huge reactor set up.....can't think of name

Edited on Mon Jun-28-04 10:06 AM by Don_G
Occurred around 1812 as I recall, collapsed part of the ground in the area and caused the Mississippi River to run backward for an hour or so to fill in the depression that's now Reelfoot Lake.

18. I just logged on here to Du to see...
if anyone else felt a tremor. I'm in central Indiana and at about 1:15am my table and ceiling fan just started to shake. I was here on the internet at the table so I immediately reported it online to the earthquake center website.

:scared:

i wondered if anybody else felt anything anywhere. I knew I could count on DU mentioning it! Thanks! At least I know maybe it wasn't my imagination. We hardly ever get earthquakes around here.

33. so it wouldn't be reported? whaaaaaa?
4.5 would be worth a mention on the news, surely?

wouldn't a brisk 5 second shake get you wondering what was next?

or would you just go about your business

I grant, when I felt that one in 72 or so, I didn't know it was an EQ, but nobody'd heard about New Madrid then, either, really

in the times since, it's become fairly widely known around here

that quake in 1811 or 12 rang churchbells in Charleston, South Carolina, IIRC

I'm in Lasalle County, IL ... and I swear, when it first hit, I had a moment where I wondered if a bomb had gone off and God laughing at me the 'terra alert' debunker. OK, yeah, so it's silly and panicky, but durnit, this is Chicagoland, not California -- what do I know from earthquakes? :-)

Anyhoo, I felt it. LITERALLY shook the walls of my house -- like a thunder roll that just kept going and going and going. Lucky it didn't knock anything off the walls.

Hate to think what it'd be like at ground zero.

I was sitting at my desk, and one of those empty plastic cylinders that film comes in, started to vibrate. I immediately looked at my watch, it was 10 min. after the hour. Yes, I did think earthquake, absolutely. However, I felt absolutely no shaking in the house.
Wouldn't have thought anything without that vibration.

Weird!
