Drove 100 miles to see F911 tonight (this is a Doozy!)

The are not showing the film in my city, so after reading all the posts and reports on DU ... by Sunday afternoon I just couldn't take it any more and decided to drive to Birmingham with my girlfriend (I'm a guy btw) to see it.

Since it’s almost a full two hour drive we had to do some rushing to get ready.. eat an early dinner, gas up the car, etc etc.

I bought tickets online for the 8pm show.. We made good time getting there and actually arrived 30-45 minutes early. After it started pouring rain we went ahead and went into the theater a good 30 min before the movie started.

It was in the big screen room (sign at the door said seating for 469) and it was less than half full (maybe 30-35%). There was a good mix of whites, blacks and people of all ages, but was surprised to see a lot of younger people (18-25 range).

Then a slow but steady flow came in, I was starting to think it wasn’t going to be anywhere near filled and then starting about 10 minutes before a lot of folks started filing in.. probably ended up with about 80% full in a very big room.

The movie was fantastic.. In my opinion it was presented in a much more serious way when compared to other Moore documentaries.

The crowd was not what I would call rowdy, but there were a lot of parts when people applauded, lots of laughter at times. The biggest crowd reaction was when Moore narrating asked 'why did Bush just sit there for over seven minutes' and during the pause some guy yelled out 'because he's an idiot' .. And the crowd went nuts with applause.

There is a lot in this film.. A lot to digest and I really haven't had a chance to take it all in yet (you'll see why below). I cant speak for a Republican or Bush supporter, but if you are a Democrat who is not active and get all your news from tv and your newspaper.. There are going to be a lot of things that you never knew about Bush and the government since he took power.

We left the theater not long after 10pm and stopped at the nearest convenience store to stock up on beverages and snacks for the late drive home.

This theater is on the lower south side of Birmingham and we are heading north. After driving back thru downtown BHM, about 5 miles north of the suburbs there is a rattle from the engine. I turn the radio off and after a couple minutes trying to figure out what the noise is, the engine basically just blows.

The car pretty much dies, its clanking, we are going up an incline and I was already going slow to try to figure out what was wrong, and barely have enough steam left to get the car off the road before we stop.

First thing I notice is we are already out of BHM, theres nothing around.. And when I open the hood in the pitch dark you could see the steel on the front of the block glowing it was so hot!

This is bad news. While trying to find a flashlight to check out the engine, we are so close to the highway that truckers and big suvs are actually making the car sway when the blast by.

Waited for a break in cars and got the drivers (highway side door) open so we could push the thing a little (up-hill) to get it over some.

The car is toast (threw a rod I think?). My girlfriend has a cell but its low on batteries, we called two people and neither answered, then I realized we don’t even know what mile marker we are at.

All the while our car is there with the hood up (I was hoping to cool the engine to maybe try for an exit).

After a while of being on the side of a dark highway, late at night, with the hood up .. the more I thought about it the more I didn’t like it.

I checked the engine and it doesn’t look good, its toast. My gf's cell is running low sooo .. There was an exit a little less than 1/2 mile behind us so decided we should walk back there and find a regular phone, help, or at least find out what the hell mile marker we are at.

My girlfriend asks if we should lock up the car before leaving, and I'm like .. Theres nothing in it but chips and snacks, what are they going to do, drive off with a broken down car??

What I'm really thinking is there are a lot a cars screaming by on this dark highway, that hood being up is pretty much a bulls-eye, if I ever wanted a gun this would be a good time to have one.

Anyway, we are walking up the side of the damn highway, and as we get closer to the exit ramps I notice by the car lights on the other side that there are none of the normal signs.. You know, the ones that list the gas stations or food joints for that exit.

We get a little closer, and I cant see everything because of trees, but its pretty damn apparent that there is NOTHING at this exit. No stores, nothing.

We go a little further and its looking like the worst is true and trying to figure out what our next move should be. Finally told my girlfriend that we should just turn around, go back to the car and make the best of her cell phone time left.

We go walking back a few minutes and then a mid-size suv (Blazer?) pulls over on the shoulder about 100 feet in front of us. My girlfriend says I should talk to them first, I agree and walk ahead of her.
I'm still trying to register, because they really did stop fast, the guy almost swerved and came to a real hard stop ahead of us.

Not sure what to expect, or even if I should be the one to walk up to his window first.. The guy jumps out of the car and it’s a black guy who comes around and meets me when I get to about 25 feet behind his truck and says ..'Hey do you need some help?'.

Reason I say he is black is because this is the heart of Alabama and I am on the side of the road and VERY white (it’s a minor detail, but everything does factor in when you are stranded)

I said something like 'yeah, well sorta' .. The cab light was still on in his car so while talking I'm looking.. trying to see how many people are in this new car off the highway.. and who all is in it.

There is only one other person in the passenger seat, so I walk forward to try to see who this guy is and what is going on here. I told him something about triple A or something until we could get closer to his car and then when walking up saw it’s a woman in the passenger.

He says he would be glad to give us a ride, and after looking around best I can tell they seem legit, so I go lock up the car and he even helps me push it off the road some more.

I get back to their car and in the middle of the night with all the highway traffic wizzing by, before getting in this car of strangers on the highway..

Call me crazy, but just as a qualifier, before getting in the car I wanted to know what they were doing to help, where are we going? ...

So I asked them if they were from around here and did they know a place they could drop us off for a phone or help..

The girl pipes up 'oh, we are from the same town you are, we saw your tag on the car and knew'

The next (very hesitant) question was .. 'so instead of the next store, can we ride with you to get back home?'

.. 'Well of course, that’s why we stopped.'

I could have kissed the woman!!

We load up in the car and the guy takes off almost as fast as he stopped.

We exchange hellos and after a little talking, turns out they had already passed us. They knew we lived in the same city (You can tell where you are from on the license tag numbers in Alabama) .. SO after seeing our car they went to the next exit, turned around and came back, then they turned around again at the next exit to come back up and help us.

I just couldn’t believe it when they told us, it was like shock. If you don’t believe there are good people out there then you are just flat WRONG.

Right after that, we exchanged polite conversation .. What do you do, where do you work at? ... Turns out the man driving is a 6th grade school teacher.

A little later, still in amazement, I asked then why did you go to all that trouble to stop, turn around, and come back and help us.. The woman answered "oh, well you know, sometimes you just feel like helping people out".

We had a good hour and half ride, and after about 30-45 minutes it got quiet (its after 1am now) and I started thinking about the movie. And how Moore was talking about fear, about how the Bush admin always uses fear.. with the terror alerts, and how they use that for political reasons to keep people afraid.

If you havent seen Bowling for Columbine you should, because there is a lot more in there about fear and how the media is always using it to scare people.

Sitting in the back seat of the new strangers who saved us from being stranded on the highway all night. I had a lot of thoughts to reflect on during the last hour of that trip and realized everything we are told is wrong.

Sometime after 1am Chris and his wife dropped me and my girlfriend off in the driveway of my front yard. I offered him money for gas, a check, anything I could think of and he refused all of the above.

Regardless of what you are told by the tv, America has the greatest people in the world if they would just let us be ourselves.

Finally being home, standing on the front porch in the middle of the night and waving goodbye to Chris and his wife driving off was the best feeling in the world.

We should all be that lucky,

Best
Kelley

6. I've never been in jail, but ...

Let me tell ya, there is no better feeling from being stranded than just the simple fact ...

I'm Home!

Those are damn good people.

For now on, if I see someone in trouble... I will definitely look at it differently, and not be so hesitant to help out.

The guy wouldn’t take anything.

Once we figure out how to get my girlfriends car back here, I'm thinking about writing a letter to the newspaper about our new friends.

Believe me, there are a lot of GOOD people out there!

19. I understand you wanting to express thanks.......however.....
There *is* pleasure in giving, and you gave them the opportunity to feel good about themselves, too.

I'm glad you've met some new friends, and now you can spread the good feeling by helping others...... not just on the highway, but in whatever circumstances.

That's how it keeps going 'round......

Kanary, glad you made it home OK, and glad you wrote the post.....

22. In this case I think you are right on the money

He didn’t really seem to have any interest in even hearing us thank him.

You kind of expect people to do the ... 'oh that’s ok, no problem.. Glad to be of help, blah blah blah'

But he was just.. you're welcome and that’s that.

So I guess you are right, they did it because that’s what you're suppose to do.

Until last night, don’t think I have ever had a first hand experience like that.

33. Or...... not "supposed to", but "Want to"........
Possibly, for this kind-hearted couple, it wasn't a duty, but more of a joy..... Some of us are weird that way. :)

Let me give you an example...... Today, I took a book I picked up for the woman who runs the local Greek Market in town. I had just found the book last week, and had it with me and showed it to her and she thought it was a great bok of pictures of Greek Islands. She oohed and ahhhed over it.... So, on my way home from out of town the next day, I was passing the same bookstore where it was on sale, and picked up a copy for her.

I took it to her today, and she not only paid me back for the book (which is fine, as I'm poor, and, while I'd love to make gifts like this, I just don't have the $$$), but she wanted to give me a free gyros. For what... just because I took 10 minutes to get her a book? Nope.... it gave me joy to do that, and just thinking of her while I was getting the book gave me enough pleasure to make it worth my while. We don't have to be rewarded for doing kind things...... just having the opportunity to give to another is the reward.

Further...... many, many many years ago, I was traveling in Greece. I got sick, and people in a little village took me in and cared for me. They knew me not......... I was a total stranger to them. Their kindness will always be with me, and they were also poor people. Yet, they gave of themselves. There is *no* way I can ever repay them, so I think of them when I have the opportunity to do for others. It makes their kind presence real to me all over again.

And, on and on it goes.......

Kanary

8. Thats a good question ...

After dealing with facing the reality you're stuck up the river without a paddle. No exits, no stores, no nothing.

Plus this is a pretty big highway, it goes all the way to Detroit and everywhere inbetween.

When we finally did talk in detail, that came up when my gf said why we were there.. And I did wonder if there was a chance.

Then his wife says something like 'ohh, that’s that guy that is so controversial'

At that point I didn’t think it was a time to be preaching.

Being stuck on a dark freeway has a tendency to distract you.. I was still shocked they had stopped to take us on a two hour ride home.

Then she says .. 'is the air ok in here for you?'

Yes mam, it’s a hell of a lot better than the air walking down the side of the road!

11. blowing a car engine
I'm so glad you were rescued by these wonderful people! The fact that they spotted you and went around and back to help you is especially touching.

I had an engine blow like that on me but I didn't get stuck on a freeway. There was no indication or anything from the "hot engine" light.

They broke the news to me at the dealership where I bought my car. Now here is the surprising part: it is a GM car and even though it was out of warranty, they decided to replace the engine for me free of charge.

Sometimes people in corporations do good things. I have a real hard time with that because I hate corporations more than anybody but that is a true story--they did replace my engine (which was out of warranty) free.

34. "went around and back to help you"

Thanks for the comments, and yes, the fact they turned around (basically twice) to come back and help us made it even more compelling.

His wife said it was because they were going so fast they couldn’t stop in time after they saw us.

But once you've passed its even easier to say like .. 'oh well, we missed them, someone else will stop' and then continue on your trip.

I was very impressed, they were young in age, but at the same time they were old fashioned 'good people'.

Glad to hear about your experience with the engine blowing and they replaced it anyway, unfortunately my gf was not so lucky.. She is without a car now.

14. Great Story!! I Have A Similar One...
My daughter (grrr!) left her purse on a bench with $70 cash, her cell phone, etc etc in it...this was in sort of the poorer section of East Hollywood (CA) after frantically going back to look for it and lots of tears and lectures from me in the car, (her address and keys were in it!!) we received a phone call on our answering machine, teenaged girl found it and her mother was going to drop it off to us after work.

When they came it was obvious they didn't have a lot of money. They didn't speak much English and it was difficult to get them to take even a $10 reward. I mentioned that a lot of people would have just taken the stuff and they said, we wanted to do the right thing.

Truly there are a lot of wonderful people in America! We need to stick together and take back this country.

20. I was stranded in Atlanta at 3:00 am with two small children,
our flight was rescheduled for 12 hours later due to bad weather. My husband stayed behind at the airport to find our luggage since it had our son's asthma medicine in it. I went ahead to the hotel the airline sent us to with the kids. We were wet cold and hungry.

When we arrived at the hotel the last room was given to the person three ahead of us in line, but I would have to wait at the hotel anyway for my husband to catch up with us. So when I got to the counter I told the clerk I'd just have to make due in the lobby.

The man behind me in line interrupted and said he had a confirmed reservation and we could have his room. He was very unlikely to find a cab that night let alone another room.

This was a few years ago and I've always regretted not getting his name.

23. Fear
We are taught to fear other races and social classes, to treat them as automatic crime suspects.

A striking example was last night's Frontline about the Long Island community that tried to get rid of Mexican migrant workers. A woman testifying at a community hearing said that she no longer let her daughter walk anywhere alone because the Mexicans were around. Apparently a couple of them had committed crimes, but it was sad that this led her to conclude that they were all dangerous.

I think the local residents were right to be concerned about people purposely hiring illegal workers to circumvent the tax and minimum wage laws, but as usual, they took it out on the wrong people.

BTW, when I was in high school, I was traveling through northern Minnesota with my family, and we got a flat tire. There happened to be a spare in the trunk, so my dad got out to take care of the situation. Cars zoomed by the whole time, but three different cars full of the local Native Americans stopped and asked if we needed help.

I was especially touched by this because we had just come from my father's hometown, where attitudes toward the Native American population were extremely racist.

27. the helping of others only helps all of us.
we've been programmed to fear the different skin tones here in the states. Well, it's about time to realize we all live together, and every mother and father wants better for their kids. You can read the bible and go to church as often as you want, until you actually help someone, you will never understand it. Out of many-One. That's what scares the powerfolks.

BTW, good story, now, help the next person you can.

I probably would have called!!

And if you know the road, there is a place right outside north BHM on 65 that’s like a blackhole or something.. Theres 3/4 exits in a row with nothing there
(right around Warrior I think?).

I'm real familiar with 65, and while we were stuck, more than once I thought 'Damn, go figure this has to happen in the worst spot of highway on probably the whole trip!!

Anyway, thanks for the shout, good to hear there are other DU'ers in this area.

37. Finding out who your real friends are ...

People have said that you find out who your real friends are when you move or need a ride to the airport.
I always said you find out when you are in jail, stuck on the road, etc .. at 3am and when you call for help then you really find out who your friends are.

Thought about that a lot last night, especially when we got the cell phone out and were talking about who to call first. Ha Ha!

But yes, you are absolutely correct.. 'it played out perfectly' and the next time I see someone in trouble I will look at it a lot different. Maybe you could say it was a 'changing' experience.

38. Great story - too bad Bush wants to divide Americans
That should be a key theme of any campaign against Bush - he is trying to make Americans hate each other.
