By the way, there was some ethnicity questions - Hispanic/latino is technically "white". The only reason it gets a separate category is that so many speak a foreign language, and that they are treated as a separate demographic for so many purposes, where as Italian-Americans, for example, are simply assumed to be "assimilated".

The Irish and Italians still encounter some nasty prejudices. For example, I've been treated very differently (in both bad and good ways) by people who feel that no Italian could possibly be successful unless he or she were mafia connected. Many people of other ethnicities encounter similar forms of prejudice based on our heritage.

On edit: That's in no way to imply that Italians, Irish, or any other white ethnicity has it equally bad or worse than any racial minority does in this country. I know better than that. I apologize if anyone got the wrong idea from my statement.

I suppose I had some ancestors who were from Europe, though I don't know of any. Certainly they had ancestors who came from Asia. So I'm as much an Asian as a European. Of course before I had ancestors who came from Africa... as did all of us. So I'm of African ancestry, too. Saying what what you are based on what your ancestry is pretty unreliable and subjective. How many generations should we go back? What's the cut off point?

And race is a controversial concept in biology. While it is true that many -- perhaps most -- biologists have abandoned it, there are still a few holders-on.

Now, I feel that the holders-on are completely wrong and that "race" is biologically meaningless. However, it's harmful for us to pretend that there aren't still influential professionals -- Vincent Sarich, James Crow, and Ernst Mayr, to name a few -- who still hold that it isn't.

Why is it harmful? Because it encourages us to adopt the view that science is value-neutral. It isn't. It exists in the context of society, just like everything else -- and should be held to just as much public scrutiny.

Most Mexicans seemed to prefer either "Mexican, Mexican-American", or "Chicano".

In Miami, the Cubans and Argentinians seemed to like "Latin" or "Latino", occasionally, "Hispanic"

It's too late to edit the poll, but the implication of "Latino" was meant to be "white Hispanic", and the other would be inclusive of the various Spanish-speaking Mestizo groups.

But I think most people who answer other, don't care to anwser, or say human, really mean that they are lily white liberals and are ashamed of it. 54. I got really pissed one time

When a server at a restaraunt asked my "what" my son was. My reply, he's a little boy. I find myself happy that people can't tell his ethnicity hence, he has always been accepted by all races. He's black enough to be accepted by blacks yet he's brown enough to be accepted by hispanic or arab people. Then again he's white enough to be accepted by whites. All I really know is that he's going to be a handsome young man and I'm gonna have to stand on the front porch with a baseball bat to keep the girls off him. Sometimes I think that people should be required to find partners outside of their ethnicities. Racism wouldn't be possible if no one could determine any obvious differences.
