1. I'm afraid of what will happen there tonight
Once again the left divides itself leaving the right with a pathway to power. US conservatives will hail it as some kind of big win for Bush if the Conservatives manage to for a government.

4. I know this is making for a very tight race but I think from
Edited on Mon Jun-28-04 07:06 PM by LibertyorDeath
everything I seen & read the Liberals are going to pull it off
a Minority Liberal Gov they will have to turn to the NDP for support
to get their Bill passed this will make them lean farther to the Left.

If the Conservatives get in it will be a dark day in Canadian Federal Politics & the next four years will be a disaster for average Canadians. The current group of Cons here are Very Far Right they have Expensive PR machines the best $ can buy busy trying to disguise how Far Right they really are. I think most Canadians won't be fooled by this.

2. Well, this is still the east coast.
They've never been big conservative voters. And the conservative leader Harper once said easterners were "defeatist", because they have such high unemployment.

They didn't like that.

Ontario and British Columbia are going to be the turning points.

5. "Culture of dependence"
Edited on Mon Jun-28-04 07:12 PM by AliceWonderland
is what Harper said. And no, we didn't like that.

When the polls close in Quebec is when things really get interesting. Otherwise, the NDP has pulled to over 20% of the vote (according to cbc.ca), which is great to see... and this before reaching Ontario.

ETA: The overall vote for the Conservatives is down in Nfld at least, especially in St. John's. Pundit now saying that the Harper agenda just does not fly in Eastern Canada.

8. I believe those totals include leanings
Actual elected so far are
9 Libs
5 Cons
1 NDPs

I had hoped the NDPs would have done better than this.

No big surprise--but a win for the NDP in Halifax! More to come.

 for that one. One of her votes was mine!

10. Good for Alexa!
I cast a vote for her the year she first went to Ottawa as (former) NDP leader. It seems like Nova Scotia has really pushed the national NDP numbers up... one of the many reasons I love NS so much.

12. I'll never forget her standing up to Bush after 9-11
"George W Bush doesn't have the right to be judge, jury and executioner."

After she demanded that there should be an international, independent investigation into 9-11. After all, it was an attack on the WORLD trade centers...

I've already cast my vote for Priscilla Setteee here in Saskatoon-Wanuskewin, hopefully we can unseat the Conservative incumbent Maurice Vellacott - who has been running off at the mouth on the irrational, right wing reaction to the gay marriage issue.

I doubt it though, there are a lot of bigots in my riding.

18. It's a good sign, keeping my fingers crossed
If it happened in the Maritimes, it could in Ontario, too. I know a lot of old Tories in Ontario will hold their noses and vote Liberal rather than for the asshat Harper. They still figure they can win all those Ont seats where the combined PC/Alliance vote beat the Libs in the last election. That ain't gonna happen.

17. 11% - wow
I'd heard a number around 7-8%, but it must have been pushed further in the Maritimes. It didn't help my home district of St. John's South (Loyola Hearn, Con, incumbant), but I get the impression that the Con support that remains there has nothing to do with an endorsement of Harper. Rather, it's the old school, deep roots thing that goes down in Eastern Canada... your family was Liberal or Tory back to the flood, etc etc. I heard one commentator saying even that was starting to break down.

23. I know very little about canadian politics.
Watching the canadian broadcast on C-SPAN is really cool... kinda surreal in a way- I mean, newscasters that are saying to be cautious, and that the returns might not be anything more than a trend from a local region...( Somehow, I can't see wolf blitzer saying that...) This is cool.

:hi: to all of the Canadian DUers!
