Canadian Election Results!
Edited on Mon Jun-28-04 08:56 PM by GirlinContempt
If anyones interested, the Canadian election results are coming in!
Atlantic Canada is done, and Quebec's staring...

Right now its sitting at:
Liberal - 35
Conservative - 9
NDP - 7
Block Quebecois - 1
OTHER - 1

I'll keep you all updated...

P.S.

Liberal in Canada does NOT have the same meaning as it does in the US.

I miss the Marxist! BRING HIM BACK!

8. Well, basically....
I would say the NDP are what the Dems in the US *should* be
The liberals are just wishywashy. They're smack dab in the center, willing to sway either left or right as public opinion or economic pressure dictates.

...what you're saying is that the NDP is what the Democrats should be, while the Liberal Party is what the Democrats are?

9. Basic, basic primer from an American who can't keep up
Edited on Mon Jun-28-04 08:25 PM by DesertedRose
There used to be the Tories, which were right of center, and the Liberals, who are left of center.

There is now a new conservative alliance, combined from the PC's (Tories) and the Reform Party/Canadian Alliance (which were further right of the Tories *shudder* memories of Presto! Manning).

The NDP is to the left of the Liberals.

And the BQ is the Bloc Quebecois.

Alberta and Saskatchewan are usually a conservative stronghold.
Ontario is usually a liberal stronghold.
The BQ, well....self-explanatory.
NDP usually has a strong following in British Columbia.

Canadian politics is based on the Westminster model - meaning, the leader of the party that gets the most representation (seats in parliament) is the PM.

Gee, I hope reading my Macleans subscription paid off! ;-)

Cna you imagine what kind of physcal shape Socialist Canada would be if they had to actually defend themselves?"

I admit I have a certain bias. I'm a liberal, but above all a pragmatist. My first goal is always to keep conservatives out of power. I see ridings in Canada where the cenetr/left gets many more votes than the Cons - yet the Cons take the seat. We've found out here in the US what happens when the left splits itself up. Open up your newspaper and see the world chaos that resulted from our Democrats not being "progressive" enough for some liberals.

223. Except that our system works totally differently
And what happens in your country, doesn't happen here. The liberals aren't a center left, they're a center center. As long as the NDP and the Liberals can make up a majority of power, its good. In fact, its BETTER having a minority government, collating with the NDP. REAL change is possible then instead of stagnant nothingness... Unfortunately the greens screwed us out of that ONE seat we needed

70. that would happen if he gets a plurality...
that is, the one with most seats but less than 50%. More than 50% would be a majority... if no one gets a majority, the one who wins the plurality gets to negotiate and form a coalition with another party.

71. You need 151 seats for a majority
if no party makes up a majority, the closest to that number forms a minority, but needs external approval to actually do anything, as they don't have 151 seats of approval.
Make sense?

Now, we need Liberal + NDP to be 155.

That way, the government can work without the Bloc ore Conservatives.

69. Basically
Basically if the LIberals get a majority again, nothing will change, and their government will be formed of all liberals.
If they have a minority, they basically join together with the party closest to their politics (NDP!!!) and get their approval for almost everything they try to do, as they don't have enough seats to do it on their own.

The Cons will NOT get a majority, so I'd rather see the NDP take those seats than the liberals, so that they liberals have more to work with in creating a coalition.

81. Think of your House of Reps if you had 4 parties...
Instead of a directly elected leader, our Prime Minister is usually the leader of the party holding the most seats in our House of Commons. If their party gets more than half the seats, they form a majority government. If they get the most seats, but fewer than half of the total, they form a minority government, and they need votes from the other parties to pass legislation. If the other 3 parties all voted together, they would have more votes combined than the governing party, and could cause the government to fall on a vote of non-confidence, in which case, we go back to the polls and have another election.

Liberals are politically central. They sway left or right, but aren't really 'liberal' in the terms that most people would use the word out side of Canada. They aren't overly Conservative, but they aren't overly left-leaning either. The NDP are very leftist.

I don't think our liberal and your liberal are really all that different, just that we have another left alternative.

168. Yes, but it isn't likely
Switching leaders after an election would signal that there is a great divide in the party. They usually only elect a new leader if the current one retires.

Two scenarios:

A leader has a terrible result in a general election, and his caucus looses faith in him. He will feel pressure to step down before the next election.

A leader genuinely retires. Our last PM retired after 10-11 years in power. (There was some pressure from within the party for him to hurry up and retire already, but he was not forced out.) When a leader announces that he is going to retire, the party will hold a leadership convention. Members of the party run for the leadership. The winner becomes the leader of the party, and if that party is in power the prime minister.

You do not need to be a member of parliament to run for the leadership of the party. It is possible to be PM without even holding a seat in the house. If a new leader does not have a seat, a MP from a safe riding will give up their seat, and the new leader will run there in a by-election. This MP will naturally be rewarded with some cushy post somewhere.

because their social philosophies are closer than the Conservatives would be, they are natural "enemies" and the Liberals will do nothing that would make the Conservatives look good for when we end up back at the polls in a year or two at most.

127. Possible...
The Conservatives are a merged party, formed from the Progressive Conservatives, a centre-right party, and the Reform/Alliance, a more stridently right party. The merger was not a happy one, with many of the "liberal" conservatives from the PC side of the merger bolting the party, some of them joining the Liberals. So, there aren't many "liberal" conservatives left in the Conservative party.

A more likely result is that Mr. Martin will have to reach across to the NDP either on a vote-by-vote basis, or to form a true coalition government. This is good, because it pulls the Liberals left and gives the NDP a BIG voice in parliament, much bigger than 26 or so seats would normally have given them.

As background, and a bit simply, if a government loses a vote in parliament, then the government falls and it's time for another election.

Sid

225. The wacky world of Canadian politics
Martin is a fiscal conservative and theoretically socially liberal (this needs to be put to the test). This makes Martin a good Liberal.

The NDPers are socially liberal and fiscally liberal. This can be a Bad Thing as unchecked it can lead to deficits. However, if they're running in coalition with the Liberals then their social liberalism is an asset and the Liberals will keep their fiscal liberalism in check.

The defunct Progressive Conservative party was socially all over the damn place, fiscally conservative when it came to liberal things but free-spending liberals when it came to their pet projects. They were also found to be corrupt as all hell, which led to their downfall. The Liberals should have learned a lesson but didn't.

Running parallel to this was the Reform party which was right-wing socially and never formed a government so we don't know fiscally. That fell apart, spawning the CRAP party which quickly changed its name to the Alliance party, which was simply more of the same under a different name. Then somebody got the bright idea of trying to merge the (whatever they're called this week) party and the dregs of the Progressive Conservatives. In a catfight of a leadership review (during which one contestant was called "an NDPer who calls himself a Conservative for reasons known only to himself and his psychiatrist") the right-winger's triumphed. Joe Clark (former Conservative Prime Minister) left in a huff and eventually started stumping for the Liberals. :wtf: They're called the New Conservative Party (I think - I dunno, I've given up trying to keep track).

Add into the mix liberal Conservatives, conservative Liberals, the Bloc Quebcois (don't get me started), the Communists (Marxists?), the Marijuana Party (I'm going to try and get Ahknaten to run next time - I'll be policy wonk), the Greens (who would probably make good NDPers, Communists or Stoners if they'd just read) and a variety of smaller, wacko left and right parties you can imagine the kinds of headaches people who live this full-time get, nevermind those who just pay attention during elections (if then).

after all, this is a party created to beat the libs and end vote splitting... the MYTH of vote splitting. can it survive 4 years?

Ontario Conservatives blaming the western social conservatives?
Harper not being able to control Klein?
Randy White being fed to the wolves?
Peter Mackay being targeted for not winning the East?
Will Harper's rivals like Clement turn on him? look at what they did to Stockwell Day.
will the "Progressive" Conservatives flee?

172. OK, I'll try
She ran against Harper for the leadership of the Conservative Party a few months ago, came in second despite being a political neophyte. As I said, she was a shoo-in for a cabinet post if they won, but she is the type who will not enjoy being an opposition drone. No glamour in that. Now that I think of it, she may have done better as a leader than Harper, she's from Ontario, after all. I don't know if she has the patience to wait until Harper faces the long knives, but she's young and she'll probably be back.

It's all kinda complicated, it helps a lot to live here.

187. We have ridings - similar to congressional districts
Just imagine that you didn't vote for president. Imagine that the party that had the most seats in congress automatically got the white house.

Canada is a very regionalized country with a huge population imbalance geographically. Quebec and Ontario send 58% of th mp's to parliament. Ontario has 1/3 of the seats.

The Bloc has 54 mp's out of 308 seat house. They only ran in one province.

Prop rep would have cut a couple of dozen seats from the Liberals tonight.

He's in a pretty strong position for a minority leader. He doesn't need to put all his eggs into the NDP basket, which would mean taking on Jack's bottom line of prop rep. Martin can try to find support from any of the three opposition parties on a case by case basis.

If the remaining polls to return are south of Dundas st. she still has a chance IMHO

195. Some questions about Canadian politics:
The NDP, I assume, is probably not going to work with the cons, and is more likely to work with the Liberals, using their clout to swing the Liberals to the left - is this true?

Are the BC more likely to side with the left or the right?

199. There is a more natural affinity between the Liberals and the NDP
and so it is highly likely they will work out an agreement on some of the NDP issues and Martin will probably put a few high profile NDPers in the cabinet.

The BQ will vote on what best serves Quebec and, seeing as the Conservatives are not keen on the French, they won't be too supportive of the Conservative ideas but the BQ won't take sides either.

I find the CBC site the best site for news and some of their in-depth reports. Here is the link:

For newspapers the Globe and Mail is pretty good. Here is there link:

True. We've done it before. And of course, the Liberals take the credit for our popular progressive initiatives, we get crushed next election and they win a majority and scurry back to the right. Hey, it's our way. At least we've seen progressive policy enacted.

Are the BC more likely to side with the left or the right?

You mean the BQ? Yes, more left. Social democratic.

What internet website is best for Canadian news?

http://www.globeandmail.com/ (our "paper of record." Editorially very business-conservative, but some good columnists and journalists.)

And http://www.rabble.ca/ is kind of a Canadian DU.

208. Unfortunately I stayed up late enough to bring you this bad news:
The NDP lost the riding of New Westminster-Coquitlam to the Conservatives by 45 votes. This reduces their count to 19. This reduces the Liberal/NDP count to 154 - one less than a majority.

Therefore, a Liberal/NDP balance of power does not exist.

209. I know nothing about this.......
but just looked up the results from the Globe and Mail and noticed that too. How about that 1 "no affiliation" seat, can they join the 'coalition'?

210. Don't forget the Speaker
Chances are, that the Speaker of the House will come from the government, that drops the libs down one more seat. Also, the West Van-Sunshine Coast riding looks to be going back to the conservatives.

211. That's Chuck Cadman, a disgruntled Conservative
who lost his party's nomination.

Distressing. The NDP was hurt by Martin's playing the strategic voting card in the last week and devastated by awful voting breaks, and now we're left without influence.

212. I watched the numbers in disbelief
When I saw the Lib/NDP numbers dip to 154, I couldn't believe something so bizarre could happen. What a night.

They're talking recounts for several ridings in BC, but who knows what will come of that.

Why do I have the feeling that we're entering into our equivalent of Florida 2000?

224. I missed the excitement -- working at a polling station until 10 PDT
Saanich/Gulf Islands. Our NDP candidate (Jennifer Burgis) worked her buns off and ended up doing way better than expected, even in parts of the city that gave us low approval in the 1996 and 2000 elections. We now have a LOT more information that will help us in our next campaigns (federal and provincial).

The neo-Cons lost a lot of votes here in BC -- the Liberals and the NDP gained.
