Transcript of Michael Moore vs CBS' Hannah Storm:
Storm: "So this is satire and not documentary? We shouldn’t see this as-"
Moore: "It’s a satirical documentary."
Storm: "Some have said propaganda, do you buy that? Op-ed?"
Moore: "No, I consider the CBS Evening News propaganda. What I do is-"
Storm: "We’ll move beyond on that."
Moore: "Why? Let’s not move beyond that."
Storm: "You know what?"
Moore: "Seriously."
Storm: "No, let’s talk about your movie."
Moore: "But why don’t we talk about the Evening News on this network and the other networks that didn’t do the job they should have done at the beginning of this war?"
Storm: "You know what?"
Moore: "Demanded the evidence, ask the hard questions-"
Storm: "Okay."
Moore: "-we may not of even gone into this war had these networks done their job. I mean, it was a great disservice to the American people because we depend on people who work here and the other networks to go after those in power and say 'Hey, wait a minute. You want to send our kids off to war, we want to know where those weapons of mass destruction are. Let’s see the proof. Let’s see the proof that Saddam Hussein had something to do with 9/11.’"
Storm: "But-"
Moore: "There was no proof and everybody just got embedded and everybody rolled over and everybody knows that now."
Storm: "Michael, the one thing that journalists try to do is to present both sides of the story. And it could be argued that you did not do that in this movie."
Moore: "I certainly didn’t. I presented my side-"
Storm: "You presented your side of the story."
Moore: "Because my side, that’s the side of millions of Americans, rarely gets told. And so, all I’m, look, this is just a humble plea on my behalf and not to you personally, Hannah. But I’m just saying to journalists in general that instead of working so hard to tell both sides of the story, why don’t you just tell that one side, which is the administration, why don’t you ask them the hard questions-"
Storm: "Which I think is something that we all try to do."
Moore: "Well, I think it was a lot of cheerleading going on at the beginning of this war-"
Storm: "Alright."
Moore: "A lot of cheerleading and it didn’t do the public any good to have journalists standing in front of the camera going 'whoop-dee-do, let’s all go to war’. And, and it’s not their kids going to war. It’s not the children of the news executives going to war-"
Storm: "Michael, why don’t you do you next movie about networks news, okay? Because this movie-"
Moore: "I know, I think I should do that movie."
Storm: "-because this movie is an attack on the president and his policies."
Moore: "Well, and it also points out how the networks failed us at the beginning of this war and didn’t do their job."

5. Yesssir
Moore's right on. I watched most of the coverage and it was like one big military masturbation festival. THEY WERE SHOWING 3-D DIAGRAMS OF BOMBS, for chrissakes -- but no dead Iraqis? It was more like a military-industrial Expo than news of ANY sort.

9. Great work...
... I notice that MM is making an effort at getting out the message (meme?) that the news media is very culpable for our current quagfukk.

This is a seed of doubt that could easily take hold as a truism among rank and file Americans. They don't trust the media much anyway, we just need to slightly modify the reason they don't trust them, and perhaps reinforce that distrust.

18. Gee, all of a sudden they're yowling about "balance."
It's funny how important balance has become, now that there's a movie out showing just how unbalanced they really are in their daily "news" programming.

I love the way the right is now shrieking about Moore's movie not being a balanaced account. I generally ask them how balanced Limbaugh, Savage, Hannity, O'Reailly, Boortz, and dozens of others have been careful to be. That generally shuts them up.

I also remind them that the Fairness Doctrine was overturned by Reagan, with the help of Scalia and Bork, and that if they want to complain that something doesn't bend over backwards to be "fair" to right wing lunatics, they can go dig Reagan up and complain.

The main point of F911 seems to be that our news people have simply not been doing their jobs and reporting all the news. Big surprise, huh? It's no wonder the "news" people are the ones who are panning the movie. They've been caught with no clothses on, just like their little tin Jesus emperor in the White House.

19. Earpiece chatter
Love all of her attempts to stop MM with that stupid "you know what?" Here she is doing an inerview (in theory) and she sounds as if she is the one who needs to refute points and clarifying her position.

Would love to have a transcript of what was coming in on her earpiece during that interview. My guess: "stop him....stop him Hannah... cut him off before he can say we.... dang"

20. Ambushed
As Jon Stewart pointed out, Moore actually ambushed her on her own show, which was kind of the opposite of what she thought was going to happen. I suspect he knew she was going to get pissy with him, so he had the topic of the new media in mind to slap her around with. He did a damn fine job.

21. It was apparent from the beginning she was going to get pissy
In the opening of the interview, while talking about how Moore was on the front page of all the major papers because of F9/11, she looked and sounded like she'd rather be bathing in battery acid.

Moore simply did what he has shown an uncanny ability to do -- beat the empty-headed pseudo-journalists to the punch, put them on the defensive, and show them up for the complete fools and utter hacks they truly are.

23. The panic: OMG, how do we pander now?!
This whole shift has the TV news people a little scared I think. They know from audience data that people like to watch "news" they agree with. In other words, news which leans the way they do. With Bush's poll numbers dropping and more people speaking up, they aren't sure what song they should be singing. Dems are (sadly) used to hearing "news" through right wing sources. And of course the right freaks out if not even the spin, but the very facts presented, don't adhere to what they want to believe. And I'm sure they don't want to believe that F911 is popular.

One thing which seems forgotten now is that in spite of all the drumbeating and saber rattling, the numbers for support of the Iraq invasion didn't go up much until the invasion happened. If memory serves me, less than half the population believed that it was an urgent priority to invade Iraq.

27. I was taking a class on media bias during the run-up to war
The class was called Media Bias and the War on Terrorism. We had a field day picking apart the different ways the networks used unfiltered, straight-up propaganda in their coverage. At one point the professor brought in a copy of "Starship Troopers" and we compared the propaganda scenes in that movie to the actual news, and the similarities were quite disturbing.

Michael Moore ABSOLUTELY needs to target the news media in his next movie. He touched on it briefly in F9/11 and Bowling for Columbine, but he really needs to let them have it with both barrels. The fact that the people whose job it is to inform the country are being paid to lie to us never ceases to scare the SHIT out of me.

31. The balance fallacy
I realized as a teenager, when I first heard the "liberal media" accusations tossed around, the utter logical emptiness of this assumption that journalism should be 'balanced', which is that "fair" and "balanced" are not synonyms.

If there's an argument of any significance to be reported, it stands to reason that one side is right and the other is wrong. Hence, simply reporting the truth will make the latter side "look bad".

If you insist on trying to not make either side look better (not that today's journalists are even trying, but that's another story), you're essentially punting any expectation of a real solution to the argument emerging -- you're assuming both sides are equally wrong. Man, isn't that a sad state for a country to be in, when neither side has a good answer?

The truth is always fair, whether it's balanced or not. It's possible to slant the truth by omission, but nobody should be criticized for saying true things -- and of course, the "left's" (I put in scare quotes because opposing the VRWC these days has less to do with some sort of textbook liberal philosophy than just having a heart and a brain) main complaint about the lack of fairness in the media isn't (just) that it's "unbalanced", but that it's dishonest.

Edited on Wed Jun-30-04 07:11 AM by Enraged_Ape
incompetent or lacking in empathy, other than simply not to show that video. And that's exactly what the media have done over the last three years. But it's a tough row to hoe for them, because Bush just IS stupid, incompetent, and lacking in empathy.

Moore shows more of what the media has refused to show us ("Now watch this drive!", and therefore is accused of only showing one side.
