Moore lectured about "telling both sides of the story?" Oh, come now!
Edited on Tue Jun-29-04 05:34 PM by wyldwolf
I'm dedicating this post to newer DU members and those who have only recently begun following the events of the past four years...

Hannah Storm tells Michael Moore journalists try to tell both sides of the story?

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=1888271

I find it interesting that many facets of the media are going after Moore on this - as though they are offended at Moore's "attack on the president and his policies."

Where were these howls of protest when Richard Melon Scaife (http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/1998/04/27/scaife.profile/) payed hit men like David Brock to write lies about Bill Clinton (lies Brock later recanted in his book "Blinded By The Right."?) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1400047285/ref=pd_pym_ka//104-4632295-0321523?v=glance)

Where were they when nationally syndicated columnist Ann Coulter wrote that she didn't know what was best for Bill Clinton - impeachment or assassination?

Where were they when bestselling rightwing book after bestselling rightwing book openly cozied up to the legacy of Joseph McCarthy, called Democrats "treasonous" and put liberalism on equal footing with terrorism and despotism?

Where was the so-called "liberal media" (what a fucking joke!) when thousands of African American voters were disenfranchised in Florida during the 2000 election?

The media has so betrayed the American people that listening to a representative of one like Hannah Storm of CBS News lecture Michael Moore about giving both sides of the story is lunacy.

Who can forget that MSNBC canceled "Donahue," not for bad ratings as they claimed, but because a study they conducted revealed Donahue presented a "difficult public face for NBC in a time of war......He seems to delight in presenting guests who are anti-war, anti-Bush and skeptical of the administration's motives." The report went on to outline a possible nightmare scenario where the show becomes "a home for the liberal antiwar agenda at the same time that our competitors are waving the flag at every opportunity."?

http://www.allyourtv.com/0203season/news/02252003donahue.html

Who can forget that CNN's top war correspondent and respected journalist Christiane Amanpour, during the Iraq war, said: ""I think the press was muzzled, and I think the press self-muzzled. I'm sorry to say, but certainly television and, perhaps, to a certain extent, my station was intimidated by the administration and its foot soldiers at Fox News. And it did, in fact, put a climate of fear and self-censorship, in my view, in terms of the kind of broadcast work we did."

http://www.usatoday.com/life/columnist/mediamix/2003-09-14-media-mix_x.htm

Driving this point home, how about this: As the Iraq war started, CNN moved the retooled political debate show, Crossfire, to 4:30 - safely out of it's prime time slot of 7PM and effectively ensuring working Americans couldn't see the show.

This was a blow to those who "prefer both sides of the story" because Crossfire features (on the "left") former Clinton campaign gurus James Carville and Paul Begala. They're sort of the anti-Bill Press and Alan Colmes if you know what I mean!

Before Crossfire was moved out of prime time, interesting enough, the April 15, 2002 edition of US News and World Report reported Republicans were blackballing the show - refusing to appear as guests!

Hmmm...

And who can forget Peter Arnett, who won a Pulitzer Prize reporting in Vietnam for The Associated Press, and garnered much of his prominence from covering the 1991 Gulf War for CNN, and was fired for simply saying "the American-led coalition's war plan had failed because of Iraq's resistance and said strategists are "trying to write another war plan."" ?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&q=Peter+Arnett+fired&spell=1

Don't remember those stories? It's probably because the media refused to give "both sides of the story!"

Now, in my city, a popular Top40 radio station has stated they intend to post a rebuttal to Fahrenheit 911 on their website. Think they're pissed that Moore confirmed to us that Brittney Spears is, indeed, a ditz?

3. Hannah Storm got taken to the woodshed
When Moore pointed out that his movie wouldn't have been necessary if the media actually HAD presented both sides of the story, instead of shilling for war.

Michael doesn't have to be fair and balanced...just truthful.

7. God Dam It - - - Moore Is The Other Side Of The Story
As an astute poster noted here last night. Michael Moore is the other side of the story. The compliant press has told the President's side and now Moore is telling the other side. Neither is obligated to do the other's work.

8. Gee Hannah, if it bothers you so much . . .
Just tell yourself that Michael Moore is an entertainer. You know, just like Rush. That's why Moore's work is being shown in theaters, rather than spilling out on the public airwaves, masquerading as an impartial account of the day's events -- you know, like what you do.

9. If he were a news anchor or reporter...
...I'd agree that he should try to appear unbiased by telling both sides of the story. But in a documentary that he is making I think he should be able to tell whatever story he wants.

11. I note that Fox News just read
a dictionary definition of the word "propaganda" in reference to F9-11. Had a genuine big dictionary in the reporter's hand as he read it, at approximately 6:36 pm est, on Special report with Brit Hume.
The problem is that they only read one definition. Malcolm X taught us to always examine the root of a word. In this case, "propaganda" is "New Latin" used by Pope Gregory XV as in "Congregatio de propaganda fide," a congregation the pope formed to teach the truth. As a Catholic, (among other things!) I thank Michael Moore for including a Catholic quest for truth in his film!

16. LOL!!!
It would've been great if Moore "changed personalities" during the interview and cussed the little CBS hussy out, only to stop and admonish himself... over and over again. Ha ha! All in all though, he put her in her place - she's a whore for Bush.

17. If they want both sides of the story, ...
...then why don't the fuck they restore the Fairness Doctrine. I will agree with them if they wish to do that. :)

As if the Democrats get equal treatment from any of the cable networks or talk radio. Yeah, let's get both sides! Good idea!

19. Dan Rather on BBC: reporters feared they would be "necklaced" for dissent

Veteran CBS News Anchor Dan Rather speaks out on BBC Newsnight tonight

The veteran CBS News anchor and reporter Dan Rather has for the first time attacked the climate of patriotism in the United States, saying it's stopping journalists asking tough questions. In an exclusive interview with BBC TWO's Newsnight tonight (Thursday 16 May), he admits he has held back from taking the Bush administration to task over the so-called war on terror.

Rather says: "It is an obscene comparison - you know I am not sure I like it - but you know there was a time in South Africa that people would put flaming tyres around people's necks if they dissented. And in some ways the fear is that you will be necklaced here, you will have a flaming tyre of lack of patriotism put around your neck. Now it is that fear that keeps journalists from asking the toughest of the tough questions, and to continue to bore in on the tough questions so often. And again, I am humbled to say, I do not except myself from this criticism."

Rather admits self-censorship: "What we are talking about here - whether one wants to recognise it or not, or call it by its proper name or not - is a form of self-censorship. It starts with a feeling of patriotism within oneself. It carries through with a certain knowledge that the country as a whole - and for all the right reasons - felt and continues to feel this surge of patriotism within themselves. And one finds oneself saying: 'I know the right question, but you know what? This is not exactly the right time to ask it'."

He tells Newsnight: "I worry that patriotism run amok will trample the very values that the country seeks to defend... In a constitutional republic, based on the principles of democracy such as ours, you simply cannot sustain warfare without the people at large understanding why we fight, how we fight, and have a sense of accountability to the very top." <more>
