Cheney Pays Visit to Stadium
By TYLER KEPNER

Published: June 30, 2004

Vice President Dick Cheney spent about 20 minutes in Manager Joe Torre's office and in the clubhouse shaking hands with players before the Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox, 11-3, last night at Yankee Stadium.

Cheney studied the photographs inside and outside Torre's office and asked Yogi Berra, the Hall of Fame catcher, why he was playing the outfield in one picture. Cheney started watching the game from the private box of the Yankees' principal owner, George Steinbrenner, switched to a seat beside the Yankees' dugout for a few innings, then returned to Steinbrenner's box.

"I told him before the game I hope he brings us more good luck than he brings them," Torre said. "It's great any time a dignitary like that visits. It slaps you with pride."

During the singing of "God Bless America" in the seventh inning, an image of Cheney was shown on the scoreboard. It was greeted with booing, so the Yankees quickly removed the image.

Oh yeah, booking the Convention in NYC was a work of GENIUS. Wonder if Cheney will have any "words" for Rove on that one?

5. Am I anti-American because I hate the fact that we don't sing
"Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch any more?

I feel that singing "God Bless America" during that time is like saluting and shouting "Sieg Hiel!" (spelling in doubt)

Ironic that they booed him during that song. Makes me hopeful that we're finally waking up!

7. No way, jedicord..."Take Me Out to the Ballgame" rules.
God Bless America = A cheap Broadway show tune...

I much prefer "This Land is Your Land" or "America the Beautiful" if you have to have that kind of thing...

Note: Here in Houston we get BOTH "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" and "Deep in the Heart of Texas" during the 7th inning stretch.

9. Of course. Totalitarian Societies are dreadfully easy to predict
No WAY this could be "allowed" to be in anyplace other than "sports" and buried deep in the paper.

hey, that's progress, I guess. In Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia, the story wouldn't have been reported even in the sports section and many would be dead or in jail.

Hooray.

Though I wouldn't count on that by 2030.

You know, so obviously, what would have happened if it had been a Democratic Officeholder.

48-page banner headline Above the Fold in every paper in the Empire:

"CLINTON BOOED AT YANKEE STADIUM"

God Help Me I do SOOOOO miss being a Free Man in a Free Country.
