FLAGS AT HALF MAST (????)
Is there something I'm missing or don't know. I was just outside and I noticed that all the flags in front of my building and around the train station across the street are at half mast. What is it that I don't know?

in a period of mourning for Reagan.

Any President, upon death, is entitled to a 30-day period of mourning.

Even Nixon got that.

8. Technically, It's Somewhere
in the United States Code.

Which means that it's the law -- all Presidents are entitled, upon death, to a thirty-day period of mourning.

17. A POTUS Question
I tried to send a PM but was informed I don't have enough posts to do it. I have enough posts to post a thread but I guess it takes more to PM (IM) someone.

I wanted to send an IM so I wouldn't look like an idiot in front of the entire forum. Oh well, screw it:

What does POTUS stand for?

Thank you.

But if it is government flag, full staff would not be consistent with June 6th proclamation. Not only is the 4th caught up in half-staff time frame but so too was Flag Day, June 14th. Private citizens can really do whatever they want with their flags. Half-staff is required until July 5th for flags subject to proclamation (note that most governors issued comparable proclamation for state and local government display of flags).

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/06/20040606-1.html

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, in honor and tribute to the memory of Ronald Reagan, and as an expression of public sorrow, do hereby direct that the flag of the United States be displayed at half-staff at the White House and on all buildings, grounds, and Naval vessels of the United States for a period of 30 days from the day of his death. I also direct that for the same length of time, the representatives of the United States in foreign countries shall make similar arrange-ments for the display of the flag at half-staff over their Embassies, Legations, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and stations.

19. 30 days is standard for death of a president

According to the local VA Hospital:

The flag should fly at half-staff for 30 days at all federal buildings, grounds, and naval vessels throughout the United States and its territories and possessions after the death of the president or a former president. It is to fly 10 days at half-staff after the death of the vice president, the chief justice or a retired chief justice of the United States Supreme Court, or the speaker of the House of Representatives. For an associate justice of the Supreme Court, a member of the Cabinet, a former vice president, the president pro tempore of the Senate, the majority leader of the Senate, the minority leader of the Senate, the majority leader of the House of Representatives, or the minority leader of the House of Representatives the flag is to be displayed at half-staff from the day of death until interment.
