Five Men Detained Near Salem Twp. Power Plant

State police detained five men of Middle Eastern descent Tuesday afternoon for "suspicious activity" in the vicinity of an area nuclear power plant.

Federal and state authorities allege the men -- four from Bangladesh and another of Pakistani descent -- were driving around the Berwick and Shickshinny areas Tuesday looking for the Susquehanna Steam and Electric Power Plant in Salem Township.

State police said the men were asking directions to the river near the plant because they wanted to go fishing. Their minivan was pulled over by state police in Shickshinny around 11 a.m. on U.S. Route 11 in Salem Township, four miles south of the power plant.

Their van was searched and authorities said they did not find anything illegal. The men were released from state police custody pending confirmation of their identities.
