He didn't pick a Lieberman.

In 2000, Lieberman was nearly a total surprise to most of us. After a little consideration, I believed that it was a good choice for Gore. Later we discovered that trying to change reality (cleansing by Lieberman's piety and running away from Clinton) was a mistake. Also everything that Lieberman has done and said since election day has given me great regrets.

Kerry could have pulled a complete surprise on us with God knows who for God knows what purpose. With so much at stake, going the practical and popular route is fine with me.
