Granny D talks the talk
July 07, 2004
By MIKE KALIL
Battleboro Reformer
Doris "Granny D" Haddock says public service is a good experience for young people. And at 94, the Democratic hopeful for U.S. Senate believes it's a decent idea for older folks, too.
The candidate who hopes to unseat incumbent Republican Sen. Judd Gregg said anyone over age 65 should be running for office. In 1999 at the age of 89, Haddock got her start walking -- from California to Washington, D.C. -- to promote campaign finance reform.
But when it comes to public service and military service for young people, Granny D draws a distinct line -- especially with today's war in Iraq. Tuesday, she said she would support reinstating the draft, but for what she would characterize as a "legitimate" war. Operation Iraqi Freedom, she said, does not count as that. ...
Though she made it clear that she did not support the Iraq war, Haddock said that all American troops should not be pulled out of the country right away.
