How many of the lawyer-haters have experienced divorce?
Never met a divorced person who felt their lawyer did them right.

If half of all marriages end in divorce, ...

4. I think the lawyer is the lightning rod
for the anger, it's alot easier to blame the lawyer than look inside and see where maybe you have a problem.

9. Oh, that's just Bulls**t...
If you know of a lawyer who created a problem just to bill more hours you should turn them in to the local Bar Association...a decent lawyer (which most are) try to solve the problem and resolve the conflict to the best of their ability on behalf of their client...to make a statement like that is like saying that all mechanics create fake problems with vehicles to bump up their sales/repair bills..Most lawyers I know cut their fees or offer discounts at the end of the billing cycle to help their clients get on with their lives...

12. you must be a lawyer
not all of anyone does anything...
but lawyers get people 'jazzed' up about what they deserve and what starts out as amicable...turns when they decide they want more...

myself, I avoided the whole lawyer scene by writing my own papers and worked it out over time...

13. No, I'm not a lawyer ...
but had I handled my divorce myself my ex-husband would not have paid child support.

I'm happy that you were able to handle your divorce yourself and I hope that all the bases were covered regarding property settlement, real estate and taxes (and retirement accounts, etc.), but some people aren't comfortable doing that and need an expert in the laws of their state and in what their rights are.

Good lawyers help people...

5. People usually need lawyers when something in their lives is going
Edited on Wed Jul-07-04 10:55 AM by k in IA
badly - marriage, crime, bankruptcy. So it must be the lawyer's fault that they screwed something up and there is usually not some easy, happy answer.

What is with all the lawyer bashing going on today? There is a percentage of every group that are not wonderful people. (Jeez, we even found that out about accounting in the last couple of years).

The way the system is set up also seems to piss people off, i.e. contingency fees but they forget that if the attorney doesn't win she doesn't get paid for the hours of work she put in.

8. My daughter was very thankful for her lawyer
She was excellant, only charge a small fee because she realized our daughter did not have the money. We have high regards for her lawyer. Until you actully need one most of us only think the worst of them. They do help out a lot of people, we only really hear the worst about the high priced ones, there are dedicated lawyers who are there for the little guy too!

11. I have never been divorced but I am a landlord.
I had a deadbeat tenant that lied, hid and didn't pay. The jerk gave the friend who manages the property for me a total runaround. So I hired a lawyer. That got his attention. He's paid up now, and you will never hear a lawyer joke out of me. They definately have their uses.
