1. what is the problem?
I mean I don't know of anything off hand, and I'm not really into those kinds of books, but I'm not sure why specifically we need to condemn them. Perhaps I'm missing something.

8. Here's why I think
The problem is they get fundamentalists whipped up into a frenzy about living in "end times" when there will be a huge battle (nuclear) and all the true believers will be whisked away. They think this is a good thing.

The people who strongly believe this would like more war in the mideast, and support the war president. They think that nuclear war is part of God's plan for us.

I have encountered these people on other message boards. They frighten me.

2. I read the books, don't know what help I can be
I am an atheist who is strangely obsessed with stories of the "end times" and the rise of the so-called antichrist. Stuff sort of entertains me I guess, also I think on some level I wish it was me. As for anything negative about the author and books I have no details since I read them as mere fiction, like they are regardless of religious belief.

3. LeHaye is a Moonie
Tim LaHaye, author of the “Left Behind” series of books touting an end of the world point of view, was funded by Moon. (34) In 1983, Lahaye organized hundreds of ministers to protest Moon’s imprisonment for tax evasion. Despite the overwhelming evidence and Moon’s history, LaHaye whipped up the preachers telling them that the government would come after them next. (35) LaHaye was one of the founders of the Moon funded super secretive Council for National Policy (CNP), which has a theocratic agenda. (36) George W. Bush spoke to this group in 1999 and received its endorsement for President. The Bush administration refuses to let the CNP release the transcripts of his speech or tell what he promised the group. 7. The Council for National Policy
http://watch.pair.com/cnp.html#rrt
The Council for National Policy

Nelson Bunker Hunt and Bill Bright were boardmembers of the SIL associate, International Linguistics Center in Dallas, in which board meetings "a Rockefeller business partner like Trammel Crow could rub shoulders with an ultrarightist like Nelson Bunker Hunt." Bunker Hunt was/is also a trustee of ILC, a board member and leading financier of the John Birch Society, a major supporter of the Campus Crusade for Christ and third president of the Council for National Policy.

The board of directors and early membership of Ed McAteer's Religious Roundtable reads like Who's Who in the future Council for National Policy. 37. In 1981, the CNP was founded as a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization by Tim LaHaye of the Religious Roundtable, who was also the first CNP president, with funding from Nelson Bunker Hunt who served as third CNP president from 1983-84. Bunker Hunt was also among several principals of the Western Goals Foundation, the domestic surveillance arm of the John Birch Society, who also served on the newly-formed CNP Board of Governors

4. Check out Slacktivist's blog
He's been dissecting the books page by page -- hasn't gotten very far yet, but what there is is illuminating.

Go to http://slacktivist.typepad.com/slacktivist/left_behind/ and read from the bottom up.

5. Christians aren't supposed to sue other Christians
Edited on Wed Jul-07-04 04:34 PM by DesertedRose
but Tim LaHaye filed a lawsuit against the people who made the "Left Behind" movie. "By their fruits you shall know them," as the Bible says.

http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2003/112/42.0.html

A federal judge has dismissed Left Behind coauthor Tim LaHaye's lawsuit against Cloud Ten Pictures, which created film versions of the first two books in the popular series, the film company says in a press release.

"Obviously the Federal Court has vindicated Cloud Ten," says Cloud Ten president Edwin Ng. "We are extremely pleased with the result and continue to look forward to making future Left Behind films, television programming and films based on the Left Behind: The Kid's Series."

LaHaye sued Cloud Ten and Namesake Entertainment in July 1999, saying the companies breached their contract by making a film of lower quality than promised. According to Publishers Weekly, he had promised to drop the suit if Cloud Ten released the rights to the children's series. The company is currently developing Left Behind: The Series, which will air only in Canada.

9. Tim LaHaye has a longtime alliance with RevMoon.
They both considered themselves experts at mind control.

Check this out.

Before he was writing books about the last Christians on earth fighting Satan and the U.N., "Left Behind" author Tim LaHaye was a political bigshot in the New Right. In 1985, Carolyn Weaver, a writer for Mother Jones, was interviewing his wife. Weaver didn't bring enough tape. Bev LaHaye was very kind, and gave her another cassette. It was an old one that had been lying around the office, apparently.

Someone had forgotten to tape over it.

At the end of it was Tim LaHaye dictating a letter to Bo Hi Pak, discussing plans to cooperate in winning Jerry Falwell the Republican nomination, and hinting that Moon help pay for PR. (If you have trouble remembering these people, think of Bo Hi Pak as the second-ranking Spock to Rev. Moon's Kirk -- in the mirror universe, of course). Don't you miss analog technology?

Note: At the time, Moon was calling himself "The Master" instead of "True Father." It's also interesting to see that the "praying for God to pox the liberal Supreme Court justices" strategy goes way back. From Weaver's article:

Dear Bo Hi,

This letter is being written at 37,000 feet out of Chicago en route to San Francisco. Although I don't like to face this fact, I will not be home for a one month. Sometimes I think I must be mad to keep up this pace. In fact, God has convicted me about abusing my body even in a good cause like this. So I plan to turn down more speaking engagements that do not contribute to ACTV objectives and my FLS ministry of radio-TV specials and writing.

Bev and I are beginning to enjoy living in Washington D.C., more every day, and to my amazement it is beginning to seem like home. As soon as we get our radio time changed from 7:00 to 8:00 each night to 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. daily, we want to have you and your wife over for dinner.

Bo Hi, I am encouraged! Amid the bad signs I see today, I also detect a lot of good signs. The secretary of education, Don Regan, Ed Meese, Pat Buchanan and many others. Even physical ailments to three of the 76 flaming liberal Supreme Court justices. Bev was invited to the White House yesterday and was introduced to over 300 conservative leaders as "the president of the largest women's organization in America - over twice as large as NOW"... and was extended a thunderous applause. She is rather retiring by nature and was modestly embarrassed. I believe she is going to be given some unique opportunities in the future because of the growth of her organization. In fact, the conservatives at the White House are trying to get her appointed as a delegate along with Marcella Meese to the International Women's Year Conference to be held in June in Africa. That would be a golden opportunity for Bev to get better aquatinted with the new attorney generals' wife and also find out what the radical left out of Moscow is planning for the women of the world in the 1990s.

On this trip, I will be going to the Holy Land with Jerry Falwell and speaking for his three-day conference on prophecy. Confidentially, during that time I am going to talk to him about 1988 and my strategy for winning the primary. I am convinced he can beat Teddy in the general election if we could get him through the primary. I hope Pat Robertson doesn't make a play for the same thing and divide the Christian vote. I think Jerry will like my plan to recruit 435 activists, one in each congressional district, to work under our ACTV city chairman. I'll let you know what he says.

Once again, my friend, I am in your debt for your generous help to our work. You don't know how timely it was! This move and reorganization of the whole ministry to free me for more time in Washington and ACTV activities has been extremely expensive, much more so than I originally thought. But I see daylight down the road and feel it is part the Master's plan. As soon as I can afford it, I plan to hire a PR firm to give more coverage for ACTV, get our message to the people.

God Bless you! Let's plan to sit together at the first CBS shareholder's meeting when Jesse Helms makes his move to take it over.

your friend,

Tim

11. LeHayne was a political Christian loonie before he wrote the books...
.. I know that people can give you great links for this. The books are extremely badly written, to the point of laughable (if they weren't so damn scary!). He is one of those institutional Christian/politico guys that appears to have writtent these books for no other reason than to recruit followers, cult-style. The children's books are horrific! My husband's ex bought one for his, then eight year old, daughter. We found multiple killings, lots of violence, and the premise that says if a child does not TOTALLY give themselves to Christ, they will be "left behind" on Earth, without their parents or siblings, to battle hellish demons and murderers. The public schools are the epitome of murderous evil in the books, the UN is evil, and the anti-Christ looks and sounds exactly like Bill Clinton.

These are not biblical-based fiction, they are manipulative works, designed for one purpose only.. to recruit. Please check out Amazon for book clips and reviews.. it's chilling.

14. "Kiss My Left Behind" sounds like a great parody, at Amazon.com
And here's an excellent (and scary) someone posted in a DU thread today:

"Mixing Prophecy & Politics"
http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/0707/p15s01-lire.html

Also, "The End of the World"
http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/0218/p11s01-lire.html

But "Kiss My...Left Behind" does sound like fun, though!
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/159330106...

Good luck with this - this series has been a pet peeve of mine for years, and it's DANGEROUS in the wrong hands!
