Nice little story about anonymous activism. |
|
So...I'm down here in Baldwin County Alabama where we're so outnumbered that if you're a Democrat at heart you gotta run as a repug to get elected dogcatcher.
The ballot might as well say "Democrats need not apply". So what. Gotta start somewhere, so a few months ago a few intrepid souls came together and started the South Baldwin Democratic Club. There are now about 40 of us. It's a start. trof is treasurer.
Over the past few years I've become friends with the staff of our local library, especially the head librarian. I'm 6'3" and she's about 5'1", but baby, we see eye-to-eye on politics. If you've got a couple of hours, ask her about the Patriot Act and its effect on libraries.
I asked her if she'd like to join our club. She demurred. She works for the city and is afraid to "get political". Especially since all of our elected officials are repugs. I don't think I'm "outing" her. I'm the only one for miles around who hangs out here. Anyway...I'm sorry she feels that way, but I understand.
We're starting a voter registration campaign. Got a list of registered voters in our area from the county registrar. Naturally, we want to register Dems. We call and ask who they like for prez. "I'm for Bush." "Thank you very much" <click> "I like Kerry" BOOM! Then the questions and note taking begins. "Are you registered to vote? Are there any other voting age family members in your household? I can bring you registration forms. Do you know where your polling place is? Do you need a ride?" etc., etc.
I asked my friend if she'd like to help. This can be done anonymously. You just say you're calling for the Democratic party. Just work the phone for a while every day. "Oh HONEY! Can I ever! THIS I can DO! Thank you, thank you, thank you."
How sweeeeet it is.

As you said, you gotta start somewhere!!!
Your friend may be scared to join OFFICIALLY, but just think of all the new Dems she can bring in just by being anonymous!

I'm sure there are many people who will be thrilled to know there are Kerry supporters in their area and gain courage from your efforts. Good luck.:toast:

4. EXCELLENT, trof! Wonderful work! |

I bet there are WAY more than 40 people who could be in your group. The others might be more like your librarian friend, afraid to stick their heads out too far, for fear they'll get shot off.

7. We were VERY apprehensive. |
|
We hold our monthly meetings at the local city hall. We have to rent the council chambers. $35 for four hours. First time I went in to do it I was a teeny bit "whew, what will they say?" Nothing. "Yes sir. Sign here. That'll be $35. Thank you very much."
I am SO paranoid.
