1. They're whistling past the graveyard in SC ...
as well. "Edwards will have no effect on turnout." Keep on wishing in one hand and crapping in the other. We'll see which hand gets full first.

4. I think SC is pretty much Bush's.
NC is one they stand to lose.

2. As usual they keep forget about the eastern part of the state.
You know, the one that has high unemployment, dropout rates, is working-class and very democratic.
If they weren't so afraid, why the ad blitz?

3. Every dollar they spend defending Virginia and North Carolina
is a dollar that doesn't go into Pennsylvania and Michigan.

5. He is scared to death of John Edwards!
* hasn't bothered to make an appearance here since 2000, today at a press conference the arrogance he displayed was disgusting. He snarled at reporters, nearly throwing a temper tantrum when asked to compare the dynamic, energetic and handsome Edwards to Cheney. The old "it's too hot" excuse was used and off he ran. You better believe he is scared.

8. I can't believe I've missed that!
I would have loved to have seen it.
I agree with you, he IS scared. I believe this state will become hotly contested.
NC is an enigma: only one republican governor since reconstruction and usually a split dem/rep senate.

14. It was priceless, BVE,
* throwing a temper tantrum was a pleasure to watch. His narcissism is so apparant to anybody watching his reaction to reporters who dare challenge him. He is going to lose it if this continues.

6. Here's why they are worried . . .
Edited on Thu Jul-08-04 12:24 AM by Lex
.
Keep in mind the following 2 pieces of info were

*BEFORE* Farenheit 911 was selling out all over the state, including Fayetteville (home of Fort Bragg)

and

*BEFORE* Edwards was selected as Vice-Presidential running mate:

-------------------------

June 23rd's Raleigh News & Observer:

" . . . North Carolinians' support for the war has dipped.

Fewer than half of voters surveyed say the threat posed by Iraq warranted going to war, according to a statewide poll conducted this month for a partnership of The News & Observer, WRAL-TV and WUNC radio.

That wasn't the case in N&O polls before the war and again in November and January. In November, 57 percent supported the invasion, and in January 58 percent did."

http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/1353169p-7476410c.html

-----------------------------

And then this:

----------------------------

Winston Salem Journal, May 21st:

Erskine Bowles (D) Takes Double Digit Lead in NC

"From the Winston Salem-Journal, "Erskine Bowles holds a 10 percentage-point lead over Republican Richard Burr in North Carolina's U.S. Senate race, according to a statewide poll":

The statewide poll of 625 likely voters found that 45 percent currently support Bowles, 35 percent support Burr and 20 percent are undecided. The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The poll by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. found that 86 percent of voters said they recognize Bowles - a residual effect from his unsuccessful U.S. Senate race against Elizabeth Dole in 2002 -- while just 55 percent recognize Burr, who has represented the 5thDistrict in Congress since 1995.

. . .

Though North Carolina hasn't voted for a Democrat for president since Jimmy Carter, some Republicans were alarmed that the same Mason-Dixon poll showed Bush with just 48 percent of the vote in North Carolina to Democrat John Kerry's 41 percent."

7. Don't forget this is the same state that kept Jesse Helms-- an outright
fascist-- in office for over two decades.

Edited on Thu Jul-08-04 12:24 AM by Lex
and has a Dem Sec'y of State, Dem Attorney General, Dem Lt. Governor, and the rest of the council of state positions.

State Senate and State House are about evenly divided D and R.

10. I'm from NC; no need to paint with such a wide brush
There are plenty of folks here in the Tarheel State who weren't fans of Jess. In fact, in his final contest he beat Harvey Gantt - who had only regional name-recognition - by less than 6 percent. Harvey Gantt is african-american.

Lots of folks in NC were perplexed at Helms' staying power. The best explanation I heard was that, despite his obvious status as the Senate's all-time leading jerk, he was a straight-shooter. Even people who disliked his positions respected that about him. Many also liked that he usually said "no" to government spending - except when it came to tobacco price supports, of course.

Overall, we're just glad he's gone. Libby Dole is very quiet by comparison, and a helluva lot less embarrassing.

16. What I've heard about Helms is that he took very good care of his
supporters. Wrote personal letters to them and met with them constantly. He also had a popular radio show for years before he ran for Senate, so he had a following. Lot's of people sick of "slick" politicians said Jesse stood for them and cared about them.

People will love a scoundrel if they think he is working for their interests.

This is what I've heard, I've only lived in NC for 10 years, but have asked why Helms was so popular and that's what I've been told by many folks here.

12. no matter what the voters say --the machines will say another:
No matter what the voters say--the machines will say another. Bush is confidently banking on that! Bush knows the rigged electronic voting machines will keep him in the Oval Office, no matter what we the voters say! Here in Florida his brother Jebbie is making absolutely sure that we will not get auditable, paper trace, verified voting machines...in addition to having been caught with his pants down regarding the most recent Florida voter's purge list!}(
