VolcanoJen's Excellent Kerry-Edwards Rally Adventure! (I met Teresa!!)
Hello, DUers!

Yesterday, I attended the Kerry-Edwards rally in Dayton, Ohio with my mother, fellow DUer Kukesa. This is my lengthy account, but it was such a wonderful, historic day that I hope I can help interested DUers feel as though they were right there with us!

Mom is active in the Dayton Kerry campaign, and secured us spots as official volunteers at the event. Although the Senators weren't scheduled to appear until 4:30, volunteers were to be at the event by noon. We arrived at the staging area, which was in downtown Dayton on the Miami River, in a beautiful public space known as the Riverscape Metropark. Mom's job was selling Kerry-Edwards shirts, and mine was as a ticket-checker. The Kerry staff was excellent, warm, and appreciative. We received instructions, lanyards to identify us as official volunteers, and some sandwiches for lunch (they ran out by the time we made it through the line, so we settled on a shared glazed donut!) We were then told to leave the area while Secret Service conducted their final security sweep; we lined up at the metal detectors and waited to be cleared.

Security was intense, and impressive. Four metal detectors and tables were set up, manned by the Secret Service Uniformed Division (you know, the same guys who questioned Michael Moore outside the Saudi Embassy!). I counted at least 12 undercover (the guys in suits!) Secret Service agents all around the event. These guys were all business, very professional, and never took their focus off their surroundings. There were also two helicopters which circled overhead, and agents on the roofs of downtown buildings near the event. I definitely felt safe and secure, and I'm sure Kerry and Edwards did too! There's something very reassuring about having these guys around everywhere!

Crowds started packing into Riverscape at 1:00, when the gates were opened. I stood just inside the gates, directing rally-goers to their areas (there were different colored tickets which allowed you access to four different gated areas). People were fired up, happy, smiling. Homemade shirts were in abundance. Patrons were not allowed to bring their own signs (it's a common Repub tactic to bring a homemade sign which really conceals a pro-Bush sign underneath). Our wonderful teenage volunteers ran through the crowd as "Kerry-Edwards Cheerleaders," waving signs, exciting the crowd and starting the various "Kerry! Kerry!" chants that would continue throughout the afternoon.

We also had some big, tough-guy volunteers designated as Marshalls. Their job was to scan the entering crowd for pro-Bush shirts. There were a few of these characters, and they were denied admission into the close-in area by the Marshalls. Heh heh... the Kerry folks did set up a nice, uhh, "free speech" zone just outside the gates for these types, though. :D Eventually, an organized pro-Bush crowd showed up, about 50 of them, complete with banners, signs, and bullhorns. They parked themselves on an embankment outside the gates and taunted the crowd. They were humorous, and must have felt a bit overwhelmed by the gathering hoards of Kerry-Edwards fans! At one point, they chanted "FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS!" to which the cheerleaders and huge crowds responded "FOUR MORE MONTHS!! FOUR MORE MONTHS!!" They were completely drowned out, and pretty much gave up before Kerry and Edwards even hit the stage. :D

Before the main event, the crowd was warmed up by local officials, our Senate candidate, Eric Fingerhut (who gave an impressive stump speech!), and former Senator, astronaut and Ohio Hero, John Glenn. At about 4:40 pm, the Kerry and Edwards families came on stage and the crowd exploded as Tina Turner's "Simply the Best" blared over the loudspeakers. Teresa spoke first, followed by Elizabeth, John Kerry, and John Edwards.

Teresa and Elizabeth were so impressive. What gorgeous women they are... honestly, the candidates and their wives are even more beautiful in person! Teresa made a point of telling the crowd that although two men were running this time, it's only a matter of time before two women will run! Elizabeth seemed overwhelmed by the crowds. She was emotional, and thanked us for our support and love.

Kerry gave an excellent speech; I'll never understand why the media insists on calling him stiff, boring, yada yada yada. He used a handheld microphone, walked around the stage, and really got everyone fired up. When he introduced John Edwards, the crowd erupted again, with chants of "Edwards! Edwards!" As expected, he was a brilliant speaker. He talked about the optimism and hope that this ticket offers Americans, in stark contrast to the fear, pessimism and worry offered by the current Administration. After the speeches were over, a flurry of confetti and balloons were released, and "Johnny B. Goode" was played. Kerry and Edwards then worked the crowds, signing autographs, posing for photographs, and shaking hands. They remained for at least a half-hour after speaking to greet the crowds!

I couldn't get up front to meet the candidates, as I was busy taking down gates and helping people make their way to the exits. However, after the candidates were in their cars, my mom noticed a small crowd gathering over near the motorcade. She ran over, ran back and said "It's Teresa!!" I quickly jogged over to stand on the rope line, hoping just to say hello.

Teresa is so warm and enchanting. She slowly made her way through the line, shaking hands, signing autographs and smiling. When she came to my part of the line, the woman next to me asked her "How exactly are you going to pay for health care for every child?" Teresa stopped in her tracks, took the woman's hands and said, "Have you decided who you're going to vote for in November yet?" The woman said no, that she had too many unanswered questions. Teresa then explained, step-by-step, the measures that would be taken to ensure health care for children. She also explained that it's time to allow our doctors and nurses to care for their patients again. She explained that a big issue for her is putting an end to mandatory overtime for stressed-out, overworked nurses. The crowd began to get a little antsy as Teresa spoke to this woman, yelling for her attention. She put her finger up and said, "If you don't mind, I'm going to spend some time with this woman whose vote we have not won yet." :D :D :D Her press secretary urged her to leave, as they were beginning to run late, but Teresa would have none of it. When she finished with the woman, who walked away beaming and impressed, I finally had my chance to shake her hand. It's funny how when these moments finally arrive, you find yourself nervous and at a loss for words. All I could blurt out was "Teresa, I'm so glad you and John chose John and Elizabeth!" She smiled and said, "Everyone seems very happy about it!" She then signed my ticket, and I walked away on Cloud 9.

Damn, this woman is going to make an excellent First Lady, isn't she?

Well, that's about the end of my Excellent Adventure. Below are some great press photos from the event (I didn't take my camera in, as it would have been too difficult to lug it around while volunteering). While the campaign had hoped for 10,000 rally-goers, the Dayton Police estimated the crowd at 18,000!!!! Quite a successful event... although the Cincinnati Fox news affiliate reported a crowd of "only 5,000." Predictable, aren't they? :eyes:

I urge everyone to get involved with your local Kerry campaign! If you get a chance to attend one of these rallies in your hometown, take it a step further and offer to volunteer. It's so much fun, you'll meet wonderful, like-minded people, and you'll get some free stuff, too. :D

Thanks everyone, for taking the time to read about my wonderful day!!

1. Thanks for taking the time to post this!
The photo they used on the front of the Dayton Daily News this morning was better than breakfast -- it's a great shot, kudos to the DDN photographer who grabbed it. It's nice to wake up to people I want to see above the fold with a headline, for once!

46. Thanks so much for sharing your story!
I think Teresa will make a great First Lady! Much more preferable than the little mouse we have now. I had to laugh at the pro Bush sign "Protect Our Freedom." Hahhaha. I think its a good idea the Kerry campaign has to allow the Bushies access near but not in the immediate area. And when you explained why its totally understandable. Of course the media is only going to mention what Kerry said to the disrupters and twist everything. I am encouraged by all the positive news from Ohio!

It was a pleasure escorting Greg Harris to the front of the podium, let me tell 'ya. I kinda felt sorry for our elected Ohio officials, sweating it out up front for HOURS, decked out in suits, sweating but enduring the pain.

Greg Harris didn't break a sweat, I'm hear to tell ya. :D

i noticed many individual reports on the ohio appearances of kerry/edwards from du members. that's of course good for us as it means there are a lot of very active people who will work for the ticket. i saw it on tv and kerry and edwards are incredible together.

20. Man.
I hope John decides to head up to northwest Ohio sometime and visit Findlay, so I get a chance to see him. Of course, it's so much of a Republican ghetto up here that I'm not sure he'd want to bother, and I can't say I'd blame him. It does get awfully lonely up here, though. :)

Although, on the plus side, I've seen more John Kerry bumper stickers around Findlay than I have for Shrub, so who knows...

Great write-up though, Jen, sounds like you had a blast. :)

They came up to my table and told me it was well worth the drive just to see and hear John-John. They were union members and are worried about their jobs. I'm worried for them.

80. Hmmmm, I wonder.
I think the factory guys at Cooper Tire are represented by the steelworker's union, but I'm not 100% sure of that. I don't blame them for being scared though, the company wrung a lot of concessions out of them earlier this year (even after hauling in record profits that same quarter) and is starting to move "low-end" production to China. There's a lot of concern that the rest of it will eventually follow.

Most of the salaried office folks aren't feeling too confident either, from what I've heard.

I don't know why Findlay stays so staunchly Republican -- the town's really suffered under the Bush economy, with about 300-400 GOOD jobs lost in the past month or two -- between Marathon doing layoffs, Microsoft shutting their office down, and Bank One closing their mortgage processing office as part of their merger with Chase Manhattan. It's been a rough time. :(

I'd love to see John and John roll through Findlay sometime and see if they can't help a few repugs to see the light. :)

23. strategy question...
..I wonder if it wouldn't be better to encourage people wearing Bush shirts to come into the rally? Tell them they can come in, but they mustn't disrupt or heckle.

It would make good photos!

And they would be exposed to hearing our candidates speak.

At the emergency volunteer meeting (which I didn't attend, but my mother did), Kerry Staff stressed the importance of keeping the overtly Bush-supporting crowd out of the main area of the event.

I'm reminded of my own experiences at Kerry's Cincinnati Sawyer Point appearance, just after Super Tuesday, as it became clear that he was the nominee-apparent. About 35 pro-Bushies made their way right down front, and as soon as Kerry began speaking, they took their flip-flops off and began waving them in front of the Senator. He paused, and spoke directly to them. "You're incredibly rude," he said, adding "You obviously have much to learn, and much to gain from listening." Sadly, the actions of a handful of disruptors is what made the news. I can understand why Kerry staff weren't eager to allow that to happen again.

The Kerry staff felt strongly that this was an important event, launching the ticket before the eyes of America. They just didn't want any ugly moments. They wanted to control their message of optimism and hope. They have every right to do so.

Don't feel too sorry for the Bushies; I was personally impressed by their outright chutzpah. Their zone was on a nice embankment overlooking the ticketed areas; they had one of the best views available, and loudspeakers were placed directly in front of them so that they could hear every word. The volunteer marshalls reported that, after Kerry and Edwards began speaking, the Bushie crowd quieted down. One of the volunteer marshalls added, "I'm tellin' you, I think a few of them might have been listening!"

After all we've endured with the "free speech zones" designed to protect our Commander-in-Chief from the voices of Americans, I'm not exactly crying a river about the lack of close-in access for blatant Bush supporters. Hell, they had better views and seats than many of the Kerry-Edwards supporters who arrived HOURS in advance. We're kinda nice like that, aren't we?

They just can't be trusted to behave themselves; it was far too important of a day to allow them to disrupt and make mischief. I appreciate the difficult decision made by the national Kerry staff to keep them outside of the ticketed area, which was already overstuffed with Kerry-Edwards supporters.

45. People also THROW things.
Yep, that's what we were told by campaign staff at one of our volunteer meetings. They said it's serious, and people have been known to throw all kinds of things.

We DID NOT want this to happen yesterday, because that's what those 100 pompous press people who travel with the campaign would have reported.

Yesterday was TOO important!

BTW, Shrub and his bunch kept me out of his appearance in Lebanon, Ohio.

Keep writing, keep energizing, keep registering voters, and consider moving to a swing-state! Not only do we need VOTERS, we need FRIENDS to invite to dinner parties!!!!

36. Reminds me of another high-level politician
(who I cannot name for security reasons)

This politician would drive the security detail absolutely batshit by stopping to talk to people at length about issues or for lengthy chats about personal details (which would be remembered exactly and at length).

They still hate me for the times (twice) when the politician would break away from the detail to run over to my car to talk to me.

I live in Lebanon and I am kicking myself for not going up to Dayton yesterday!

I see more and more Kerry supporters here in my Republican town every day. Things are *NOT* looking good for * in Ohio.

47. Thank You, soooo much Volcano Jen...for the first hand accounts..
It's so much more meaningful when one of our own DU'ers does the writing and comes away even more enthused after the experience.

Looking forward to the next rally close by to my digs...and hopefully being as lucky as you to meet Teresa and Elizabeth!

Thanks ever so much for a great read...

Thanks for your report. It sounds like a blast. I have already ordered all kinds of Kerry-Edwards stickers, signs, buttons. I am in NY so it doesn't matter much, but I am fighting for it this year.

55. Ya know what else was cool? The office workers in their high-rises...
... with "GO KERRY!" and "KERRY EDWARDS FOR A NEW AMERICA" signs in the windows! There were so many people pressed against the skyscraper windows, watching the events unfold below them. DAMN, did they have great seats!!!

The signs in the windows were SO ENCOURAGING!!!

64. With that enormous unemployment rate, as the mayor pointed out...
... Dayton feels the pain. With an unemployment rate approaching 10%, as Mayor McLin stressed, there's no time to waste. Everyone in Dayton feels it... if you don't feel it personally, one of your friends or someone in your family feels it. Everyone is on edge. Everyone is energized toward CHANGE.

Thanks to the rally, I'm experiencing new faith and hope in my home town of Dayton. I can't express the optimism and good will that was spread all about the Miami Valley yesterday afternoon! :D :D :D

Who can? WE CAN!!

Whose streets? OUR STREETS!

FOUR MORE MONTHS! FOUR MORE MONTHS!!!

56. My god, it's going to be nice to have a real First Lady again...
one with a brain and a mind of her own, and the will to use both! What a great story, Jen. I've been an admirer of Teresa for some time (each interview with her just impresses me further), but your anecdote about her stopping to discuss health care with that woman is awe-inspiring.

Actually, we have a fantastic state representative, 25-year-old Patrick Rose, who is running for his second term in a Republican district. He'll be my main focus in November.

Well, I tried to post his photo but all I get is the url at Photo Bucket. Here's a link to his site: http://www.patrickmrose.com/index.shtml

78. Wonderful!
I had the honor of meeting Teresa myself in New Hampshire during the Primary and let me tell you, she'll be one of the best First Ladies in History..

SHE is CLASSY, WARM, HONEST, INTELLIGENT and really a comforting person.. fun too..

while my wife had a video camera shoved in Kerry's face -

(to the point of where he asked my wife, "Who are YOU and who do you represent?" - he liked that we were Take Back the Media tho)

- his WIFE Teresa was hanging on the back of his belt.. I barely saw her and asked her (I had the microphone) "and who are you? what's your job in this campaign?" - she grinned with a twinkle in her eye and said, "my job is to play horsey with this guy when he needs it.." as she playfully jerked on his belt..

we all laughed out loud and then I started making jokes about how Bush's wife was the Prozac Lady.. Teresa said, "Oh, I've met her and she's not such a bad person.. she knows how to read.."

I said, "well SOMEONE has to read to Bush, he can't do it himself!" and we all had a good giggle over that..

this was all in close and personal, with about maybe only 20 people left milling around Kerry who refused to leave until he has answered EVERY PERSON'S question in the room..

I had total respect for him at that moment.. and her..

we talked some more and she actually INVITED my wife and I and our Take Back the Media camera crew to go WITH THEM to the Carole King show later that evening..

we had to beg off as everyone had the flu, was exhausted, and it was colder than it had ever been in history there in New Hampshire that night --

but I did beg her to let us have a rain check and do something in the future.. and let me tell you, she didn't forget us!

When he won the Primary we were there too and I went over while Teresa was talking to some folks in a line and she cut through the line and came right over to me and say hi and ask about our commercial (we were playing the ARMY OF ONE commercial in NH there 3000 times during the primary season) -- I ended up giving her a card which she gave to Marvelous Marvin, her very cool security guard to hand on to..

she is the COOLEST lady in the world, and I'll bet if any of us ever met her again she will REMEMBER US... that's the kind of people these folks are..

they have my complete and utter trust and I will work hard to get them into OUR white house.

I'm so jealous of your day, but SO GLAD for you and US that you had it.. great report, wonderful news..

and YOU are a great patriot as well - thanks to all of you!!
