Apparently on Rush's site there was a photoshopped picture of Kerry and Edwards looking much closer than in the original picture (without admitting to the alteration). Since there is such a striking difference in looks between Edwards and Cheney, and since that is going to be an important factor in this media-obsessed culture, they're trying to counter it by turning Edwards' looks against him and suggesting they imply "gayness". It's a strategy to appeal to their cave-dwelling wife-beating base.
