Bush campaign pulling the ad featuring McCain! ALREADY!
Just heard Judy Woodruff say it on CNN. Wonder if McCain demanded it, or if they believed it was hurting more than it helped?

1. When was that ad shot?
I've heard that that particular ad was shot a long time ago, and they are just surfacing it now that they need it. No verification, though. Any idea when the ad was actualy filmed and produced?

No surprise they pulled it, though. How dare McCain have an opinion of his own?

6. I thought it was clips put together
My understanding was that this was not filmed but various clips of McCain-Bush put together to demonstrate McCains support for W. I was also under the impression that McCain was not involved in the creation of the ad. I have no hard support for that impression just something that I think I heard somewhere. Does anyone know for sure.

14. It showed McCain READING an introduction for Bush*...
and he wasn't exactly enthusiastic, either.

It ran here in DC/Baltimore, but now it's gone.

16. Ah!
See, I live in Jersey. We vote on the LAST DAY of the Primaries, so I didn't get to see any of those spots. And the Republicans pretty much write us off as a blue state loss in the general election. Plus, our local networks are all NYC networks, which the Republicans know it's a waste of time to spend on as well (too many poor and/or liberal voters, too expensive to get airtime compared to the benefit).

Having only read about it, it sounded like he was standing there with a big goofy grin on his face, holding Georgie's hand.

That makes a lot more sense.

23. Yes, you re right.
They made an ad out of clips of McCain during his recent trip with Bush.

This was not an ad made by McCain; it was made by Shrub team.

2. Imo, most repigs don't like McCain. So why air it in the first place?

17. Moderates, that's why.
McCain is popular with Moderates. He's a Republican, a war hero, and yet he's often moderate and occasionally liberal. He also, generally, has a reputation for speaking his mind. McCain is the ideal "swing voter" endorsement. THAT'S the point.

The Republicans don't need commercials where Tom Delay and Ed Meese talk about what a great guy Bush is. That's preaching to the choir. They need commercials that make people think, "Gee, McCain seems like an even-handed, honest guy, and I agree with him most of the time. He seems to like Bush. Maybe all that other stuff IS just propagangaa!"

20. Is it possible that McCain...
refuses to be used by the Republican party, but at the same time will do enough to keep respect throughout the party to enable himself to recieve the GOP nomination in 08? Maybe he wants to change the current disasterous direction his party is heading. I disagree with McCain a lot, but I do respect his honesty. It is actually better to have a few guys like him in their party to hold them accountable as much as possible.

22. It's politics.
He can only buck his own party so much, really. If he wants to be an effective Senator, he has to at least keep the other moderate Republicans on his side, because he's not likely to get much support from the Democrats. If these clips are old, as I am reading, hell. . . I could find plenty of clips of DEMOCRATS praising Bush in the past few years.

But yes, if he tells the entire party to sod off, his chances of getting ANY support from them, let alone a nomination, are pretty much shot.

3. Thanks for the info. That was a very brief run, wasn't it?
I remember hearing several Republicans on tv the day after the Edwards choice was made all referring to McCain as the first choice.

Looks as if their strategy hit a snag, for sure.

7. Maybe it had a reverse effect.
People felt that Kerry was more open minded and more moderate.

5. I believe that it was actually aimed at people like myself
who were outraged at the mere suggestion of McCain on a Democratic ticket and weren't very happy about Kerry to begin with...people who were pissed off at the Democratic Party and saw it as one more reason to remain so. Didn't happen so I got over it. Ad is a bust.

9. Turns out you got pissed about something that didn't happen...
...because McCain has stated repeatedly that he was never asked, and Kerry has stated that he never asked.

12. Many DUers just have a tendency towards hysteria.

I don't really understand it, there are so many real issues to be outraged about, why seek out fantasies?

8. Listening on Laura Inghram this morning McCain was
using words that were not bashing Kerry. He was saying that both Kerry and Edwards are good men.

11. McCain was angry about that ad - he went on the offensive.
I think that's why the Repukes pulled it so quickly. I think they got the message that as long as they played the ad, McCain would play the talk shows saying nice things about Kerry.

I think that McCain has nothing but contempt for BushCo and he was offended that they used those clips to put together a misleading ad.

10. The ad was aimed at Edwards to denigrate him as 2nd choice...
McCain blew the lid off yesterday with the press release,

"I was never asked by anyone to be a VP.."

Pop goes the weasel!

(now I know what that phrase really means!)

replacing it with another one. She did show the new one, but I didn't pay enough attention to describe it.

25. When McCain went on the morning talk show today
he firmly said that he was never asked to be a VP by Kerry. Then he refused to attack Kerry/Edwards, instead said nice things about them.

His actions today killed the message of Bush's ad, so the Bush camp pulled it.

29. i think youre exactly right on this. we know that mccain likes kerry
and also edwards, and stated immediately that he will not say anything against them.

mccain definitely recognized that the sheer pettiness of that ad (incl the gop calling it "first choice" and the unveiling immediately after kerry announced edwards) was not just petty but outright ridiculous and manipulative.

mccain has his problems (dont we all) but i do have to give him credit for not playing the same old tired vindictive games this administration trumps out at every turn. we definitely dont agree with some of what he believes and does, but he does show himself consistently to have limits with what he will go along with plus he does have the medias ear and will speak out - not always with what we think but he does have more integrity than i think anyone else currently serving in the senate gop . it just contrasts so much to what the gop has shown itself to be in recent years

ideology far aside, i still think its beautiful that he and kerry would work so hard to go search in vietnam for pow/mia. its gutwrenching for me just to think about let alone what they must have done through doing this.

anyway i appreciate this part of mccain because again, its such a contrast to all the ludicrous and desperate "talking points" the gop has rolled out in the past couple days. have you seen elizabeth dole and her vileness about edwards? and there all the same words and phrases over and over

26. Bwahahah-they also used the pic of the Saddam statue which has
been featured in the news as the propaganda scam it was.

1. McCain says I wasn't asked, making Reps LiARS
2. McCain says he won't trash Kerry, since he's his friend
3. McCain says the reason he said Bush is strong on terror is not because Kerry might not be, but because of opportunity, which Kerry has not had a chance to react to.
4. Commercial used fake propaganda Saddam statue

I'd say it was a MAJOR WASTE OF MONEY!!!! Bwahahahahahahahah

said he better be careful with it. I was shocked when I heard it because all I heard were the lies that got us into Iraq.
