Calico cats tend to have an additional X chromosome. As a result, they are almost always female (XXX when they should be XX), and male calicos are almost always sterile (XXY when they should be XY). Cats have always been associated with Satanism and witchcraft, and female witches were routinely accused of casting spells that made men impotent. In view of how devout Ashcrot is, I find this story to be completely plausible.
