religiously insane Orran Hatch reads bible to Senate

http://166.70.44.66/2004/Jul/07072004/utah/181590.asp

Hatch backs nominee who backs St. Paul

Reading from the Bible on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, Sen. Orrin Hatch endorsed a federal judicial nominee who wrote that wives should have a subordinate role in marriage, with the Utah Republican emphasizing "millions and millions of people will agree with" that view.
In a preview of the religious rhetoric that will likely dominate next week's scheduled Senate debate over a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, Hatch led the fight for confirming Arkansas lawyer J. Leon Holmes to the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Arkansas.
With Hatch's support and that of Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, Holmes was confirmed 51-46 in the Senate on Tuesday evening, even though many members of the Senate predicted his nomination would be rejected.

-snip-

"I don't think anybody can read this without understanding husbands have tremendous obligations in order to gain the respect of their wives," said Hatch. "You might disagree with St. Paul but there are hundreds of millions of people who agree with St. Paul."
-snip-
-------------------------------------

oh yes, educated women know all about slimy St. Paul and his doings.

and did you note all this went on during the "evening".

and now poor Arkansas gets Holmes in their backyard.

1. False connection.
Hatch is making the connection that people agree with it because it is in the Bible, and if you are a Christian, in theory, you agree with everything in the bible. For example:

"For God commanded, saying, Honor thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death." - Mathew 15:4, the words of Jesus Christ.

Now I'm not trying to start a religious debate here. Many of my friends are religious, but also accept that the Bible is a body of work steeped in the times it was written. The point I am trying to make is that people CAN have a sinscere and profound faith without adhering to every word in the Bible. Hatch doesn't want to hear that, though, because it shoots holes in his petty little point.

7. Guess I'm gonna die the death.
My mom literally makes me come unglued with anger and rage at times. Like the time she threatened to kill me.

Matthew sucks, and so does St. Paul.

2. "millions and millions of people will agree ..."
Go f*ck yourself, ignorant idiot. People like Hatch should give themselves the Darwin award and take themselves out of the gene pool before they start breeding. :puke:

Eat shit...millions and millions of flies can't be wrong.

Who is Mormon, but with a straight face accused Durbin, Leahy, and Kennedy (all Catholics) of anti Catholic bias for failing to nominate William Pryor to the federal bench.

4. Yep
During Rehnquist's confirmation hearing, Hatch defended Rehnquist's job as an election official who would stand in polling places and ask if people could speak English before they could vote.

There was some racist law that said you had to speak English to vote, and it was Rehnquist's job to enforce it.

And now the evil old bastard is Chief Justice.

5. Why does he have to read the bible...........
When "The Messiah" Rev. Moon is right across the street. He should just go get Jesus the second and have him speak in person.

15. Orrin doesn't recognize Moon as Messiah.
He only believes prophecy if it comes from the "Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints"

8. Early 1800's Americans used the Bible to justify slavery, too...
So, just because "millions agree" doesn't make it right or proper.

10. Millions used to agree that the world was flat
And frankly, I could care less what some he-man misogynist who lived 2000 years ago thought about the role of women.

16. Does the term Tyranny of the Majority mean anything?
There may be million that believe hell maybe even a majority of Americans believe that crap but the greatness of our constitution is that it protects the minority from the tyranny of the Majority. Laws in this country are supposed to be Secular. People who judge those laws should be fair and impartial. There is no place in America for a Non-Secular Judge.

17. Only to people who have read John Stuart Mill
which is still only available in book form. If only we could get Fox News to do a campy send-up or maybe some infotainment on the History Channel between airings of "Mysteries of the Bible"!

19. If the fundies in this country were
not totally ignorant of the various religions, if they were aware of the differences between Mormon and say Baptist beliefs, they would, except for their hypocrisy, rail against Hatch as the devil incarnate.

Tell a fundie that you're a Christian who believes that all men can go on to become a god and ruler of their own universe, that God was once human, that their are three levels of heaven, etc. ad nauseum and watch their heads spin.

Of course, if along the way you mention you also believe in Jeebus then somehow you're OK, just a little misguided.
