He also said that she is a closet smoker, and she smokes like a chimney.

The thing you seem to want to come out against Barb Sr. isn't going to happen---she's not Kitty Dukakis or, for that matter, Betty Ford. Does she have a substance-abuse problem? I don't know. If she does have one, I would hope that she gets the support and treatment she needs for such a thing. I'd hope the same for anyone in that situation. To attempt to make political hay about the (possible) addiction problems of Bush's mother is, in my opinion, not something we should be focussing our energies on at this time.

As someone currently in recovery from substance abuse, I guess I'm hoping and praying that my own sins, weaknesses, illness---call it what you will; I know in my heart what it is, at long last--- for which I'm attempting to take responsibility now, are not used as a weapon against my children in the future.

By the way, I heard on the Randi Rhodes show that Barbara Bush's mother and father were cousins. I was so surprised. Isn't that against the law? I mean for insanity in the kids, and all that.

wondering if it's in the "old DU". Keep in mind that fetal alcohol effects syndrome and fetal alcohol syndrome are degrees of the same problem that maternal drinking caused damage to a developing fetus. Fetal alcohol effects is a milder form that can include the obvious damage to the developing brain and body but the symptoms aren't as severe and may not get into the level of the "eyes being too close together", etc.

I know that I read in a pediatrics journal years ago that often pediatricians and gen. practioners knew an infant had either/or of these conditions, but wouldn't formally diagnose it because there wasn't a whole hell of a lot to do about it.

One doesn't have to be an alcoholic per se to drink enough to damage a rapidly developing brain/body.
