Kerry has to clear campaign coffers by end of July
Much as I hate the obscene amounts of money in presidential campaigns in the country, it's heartening to see the Dems on equal footing with Replicants.

"We have been running at the intensity, pace and style of a fall general election campaign," campaign spokesman Michael Meehan said.

That is a far cry from early March when Kerry had $2 million in the bank to Bush's $110 million.

"We're not saying, 'Where's our next meal coming from, where can we get the next dollar?' " says Jim Johnson, a senior Kerry adviser. "It's three, four, five times what anybody would have imagined was possible."

The boost in TV advertising will bring Kerry's total ad spending since the first week of March to about $80 million, a pace that matches Bush almost dollar for dollar. Kerry has been advertising in about 20 battleground states.

From a slow start in early March, he has run his ads more times than the Bush-Cheney campaign has run its ads - 73,000 separate airings of Kerry's ads compared with 71,000 for the Bush-Cheney campaign. The reason is simple, says Ken Goldstein, associate professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and director of the Wisconsin Advertising Project. "They've raised a lot of money, period. I think the Bush people must be shocked by what Kerry's done," he said.

1. He's got a $6.4 million load to pay off
I'm sure he'll send some of it that way, and I'm proud to not have donated to Kerry to help him pay off that loan. :bounce:

2. That loan will be paid one way or another...
I'd rather have it come directly from my pocket, rather than indirect. I have never given money before, but going forward I see myself giving money to political campaigns, and I think more americans should...

3. thanks for your clear headed approach physioex.....
the fact that kerry has managed to raise as much as he has, in spite of people like poster #1, is a testament to just how committed most of us are to taking back this country. i also hope that after the convention, posters will be chastised severely for posts that don't help the candidate & the DEMOCRATIC party.

5. I could care less about the loan too
I'm just heartened to see Kerry raising this much money--largely as an indicator of how committed Dems are this time around, and partly b/c it puts us on a more even playing field with the repug money machine.

7. thanks for posting this article.........
i also rated it at yahoo! it never ceases to amaze me how dems are being attacked from within & without. if there's one thing greens & repugs are hellbent on, it's the destruction of the democratic party. so we have to fight that much harder.

I am so relieved that he can easily pay off that mortgage. I thought it was very brave and showed his commitment to changing the country. After all, any upward movement is so much better than what we are now experiencing.

On Edit: WOW, I just checked my posts. This is 2001 and it seems only yesterday that I was an ignored newbie. Well, I'm no longer a newbie, anyway.

In general I wish people would give according to their beliefs. It doesn't concern me that some of them won't feel the same as I would. I would like to see the corporate interest such as Halliburton, and Enron removed from the political landscape. Have this country be a true democracy. As displaced North Carolinian I am glad to hear that NC might go to Kerry this time with Edwards.. :)

I click and donate whenever I can. Now if I can just get off of the blogs and physically volunteer. Peep. Starting this weekend. Going to a Move-on thing to register voters. Yay!

even with the astronomical amounts of money we've managed to raise, we can't afford to become complacent, we have to be involved on a more personal grassroots level. thank you for your committment.

8. Thanks Tarheel
I am ashamed of my past complacency and feel it is so terribly important now. Not to put too fine a point on it, but this country feels like it could be Nazi Germany. After 9/11, I was paralyzed and believed everything the RW media and these lying thieves said. Thank God I woke up. And if I can wake up and do my little part about this, I think a lot of people will and I think we can get this country back from this group of fascist thugs. I suppose this will be a continuing battle for the rest of my life. The fascist element is deeply entrenched and deeply powerful and requires a massive counter-movement. Therefore, politically lazy as I have always been (didn't vote in 96 or 2000), I am committed to doing my part. Hope you all feel the same.
