|
Edited on Sat Jul-10-04 04:53 PM by amazona
Check it out...our new ambassador to Poland is the Chimp's playmate! Way to get him away from the American media!
This happened maybe 2-3 weeks ago? Did we miss this here at DU?
On edit-- I read this in the rightwing Knoxville News-Sentinel newspaper. They have the story online but you have to register. Ugh. Another link to the story is on Free Republic and I won't link to them. Double Ugh. I guess only the right wing took note of this story. Ashe has no qualifications whatsoever to be ambassador anywhere but they let this one get by us, I think. If I find a "friendly" link I'll post it, but you can take it to the bank -- Victor Ashe is in Poland!

The War? ...erp, no.
The Economy? ...mmmm, probably not.
The Jobs He's Created? ...maybe if he was campaigning in India.
The republicans only have fear, bigotry, greed and hate to run on in a good year. This year has been one disaster after another for 'em. They're flailing.

wonder about my "tactical" decision to vote for him, Bush comes out with something even worse that reminds me he is a much bigger asshole and solidifies my decision to pull the lever for the lesser asshole. Bush is his own worst enemy sometimes.

8. This is such a typical republican waste of time move |
|
From the article "Even supporters admit they do not have the support of half of the 100 senators." This is the same thing they did when they impeached President Clinton knowing full well they didn't have enough votes. A big waste of time and taxpayer money.

13. Good. It's gonna hurt 'em. |

If they'd pulled this thirty years ago, it might have worked, but now, most people personally know gay people and that makes a world of difference. Once you personally know someone who's being singled out for specific exclusion from society, you're a bit less with the pitchforks-and-torches mob.
No matter how it's painted, it's bigotry and demonizing. Wacky though we are as a people, that rankles the sense of fairplay that has always been there.
I hope they make a huge deal out of this. Both Edwards and Kerry have said that they are for all the benefits that married hetero couples are for, even if they're not for gay marriage. Edwards' answer is most telling: he doesn't think the country's ready for it. Regardless, if the monarchists want to make a big stink about it, they will show that they want to exclude gays from society altogether, and this may energize their very base base, but it'll energize the rest of the electorate against them and it will be a net loss. It will also be a loss because the Dems will point out that they're on a frivolous hatefest while real questions of health care, worker overtime, outsourcing, union-crushing and the like go unaddressed. The Republicans consider it much more important to cram their personal beliefs down the throats of people than help the poor, and this can't be hidden.

15. they're playing with fire here |

I found this by another poster and I think this explains the reasons why repugs dislike gays:
Why are cons threatened by gays?
Because if Homosexuals are allowed to marry Conservatives will loose the just a tiny bit of the ability to condemn homosexuals.
That is not to say that Conservatives won't be able to still feel that Homosexuality is, a sin, a perversion, or anything other derogatory label that they wish to apply.
They will probably with more vigor than ever.
Conservatives have two things to loose.
The first; is the ability to say that "Our Heterosexual relationship is Consecrated by God and yours isn't, so therefore we are correct to feel morally superior."
The second is the ability to say that "Our Heterosexual relationship is recognized as legally binding and yours isn't therefore we are correct to feel morally superior."
At its core this isn't about Homosexuality. It is about the ability of a large Minority (or admittedly even a possible majority) to feel that their lifestyle and beliefs are "morally" superior to the lifestyle and beliefs of a smaller minority.
What conservatives stand to loose is just a small amount of their belief in their superior social standing and status, and the social status and standing of Homosexuals.
Promises to protect against the loss of status to a dominate group and or promises to win gains of status to an inferior group are the two principal political motivators.

http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/10/politics/10CHEN.html?ex=1089604800&en=954ce80eaf787274&ei=5070Asked at the debate last Thursday in Danville, Ky., whether homosexuals should have all the constitutional rights enjoyed by other citizens, Mr. Cheney said that "people should be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to enter into" and that the issue of gay marriages should be decided by the states. <snip>

23. Buncha people got married in Mass. - what changed? Nothing. |
|
The only way this issue bothers anybody is when these cold-hearted bigots bring it up for political reasons. Lot's of miserable-rotten people out there love to hear this crap. Problem is, these people are his "base" - he must be in some sort of panic to pull this crap out of his ass. I wouldn't even know gays were married in Mass if the evangelical Chimp and Mormon religiobigot Romney weren't constantly reminding everybody about it. Why can't they stop hurting people?
