Who guards our nation when the National Guard is in Iraq?
Oh, well - I'm sure that whiz Rumsfeld will come up with something...

2. Every time I ask this question, I am confronted with blank stares.
This is a serious, serious question, and it needs to become part of the national debate.

I have a feeling it will...

6. Yes me too
some people are really under the impression
the somehow bush policies have made us safer .

I contend that bush has put us all in peril
with his shortsighted ill thought policies .

With the money spent making Iraq safer ,
our National Security has been underfunded
and IT PISSES ME OFF .

:grr:

10. In part - because it's a stupid question
Nobody is going to invade the US, there is no risk a real civil uprising...the National Guard's role has changed from good-ol-boy chance to get away from the misses, and maybe have to put down a rio, or assist with a flood every now and again - to one more source of manpower and boots we can tap for dumb corporate adventures like the invasion of Iraq

Oh, and both Canada and Iceland are going to attack us, on September 12th, 0400EST. Cuba will then land at 0515 in key west.

If there's a large scale natural disaster (another Andrew or Loma Prieta) - we're screwed.

13. So many Guardsmen are also firefighters, sheriffs, EMTs, and cops at home
In smaller towns it's created a real crunch, and it's noticable in cities as well because of unfunded mandates for Homeland Security.

So yeah, we are shorthanded here at home. In case of natural disaster your insurance agent may show up, but will the rescue workers be there?

Inquiring minds want to know, but also have a sneaking hunch what the answer will be.

8. I got this from the national guards website...
"Most recently, following the attacks of September 11, 2001, more than 50,000 Guardmembers were called up by both their States and the Federal government to provide security at home and combat terrorism abroad. Today, tens of thousands of Guardmembers are serving in harm's way in Iraq and Afghanistan, as the National Guard continues its historic dual mission, providing to the states units trained and equipped to protect life and property, while providing to the nation units trained, equipped and ready to defend the United States and its interests, all over the globe."
so 50,000 were called out and there are TENS OF THOUSANDS over in iraq???? wtf?

19. Our ass is fairly bare at the moment

They could 'round up a few...though scattered all over the country....but it would take time. Much needed time that will cost many lives.

Many NG's and Reservists are also policeman and fire fighters..so they would have to short the civilian sector (more so than it already is) to raise up enough....basically robbing peter to pay paul type of thing....we're still gonna be short ....because we are short to begin with....

they would use active duty military (in the event of a national emergency)...and claim they had to because of the shortages of NG's. Now, active duty defends against enemies...BOTH domestic and foreign. So anyone deemed an enemy ( to the "state") within the borders of the US..IS a domestic enemy (by definition). We have more active duty troops than the DoD puts out. They would NEVER tell the actual number as it's considered classified and a national security issue. Don't get me wrong...active duty within CONUS is still lower than what was once considered "safe", but the numbers are still higher than they release.

Posse Comitatus applies to the enforcing of civilian law by military ...but under martial law, there is NO civilian law, more or less....because it suspends civil liberties ...Over the years both democrats and republican alike have proposed exceptions to the application of the Posse Comitatus. (war on drugs,OK City bombing,...to name just two)

more than anything, it really would depend on the type of attack and or national crisis to determine the level of action. Though with Bush in office, a minor event would cause a major reaction out of proportion to the level of threat...any excuse is all he needs to clamp down on us.

Frankly, I'm alarmed by the "what ifs" in such an event. I can see an "incident" being used to further erode our civil liberties. I took your question very seriously.

20. We Do
Would You be my martyr?

A lot of folks are so frightened these days. Sometimes I count myself among them. We fear death, imprisonment. But think of being a martyr! Okay, maybe we won't get 83 virgins but how about breakfast with Jerry Garcia? Or the whole original Star Wars set including the scale model of the Milennium Falcon?

There is safety in numbers. Remember the movie "The Net?" Don't let them turn YOU into drug dealer by changing your identity. Let people know where you are and what you're doing. Get to know your neighbors ( sometimes that's a REAL scary thought.)

We protect ourselves. So someone really should figure out what we get if we become martyrs.

I'd rather see our National Guard posted at the many vulnerable ports on our nation's coasts. I lived in Norfolk, Va for many years and you'd be truly shocked at the virtual non-existence of security even at too many Naval yards.

Second, National Guardsmen and women could be used to provide extra security at the nation's nuclear plants, power grids, dams and river terminals.

I can think of a thousand more practical and truly security-applicable things for our guardsmen to be doing than getting their butts shot at in Iraq. If and when another terrorist attack comes our way it sure as hell won't be incoming from Baghdad. But try telling that to an Iraq-obsessed freeper public and their idiot-in-charge. Think of the money and lives wasted over there when we need that money and those resources right here at home.
