Just reported: several people in California infected with West Nile virus. |
|
Just this afternoon I emptied the rainwater out of my garbage can because mosquitos were breeding in it. Everybody check around your house for standing water.

I'll be coming to the northern coastline next week - do they have a mosquito problem that far north?

5. WNV is so far occurring only in SoCal.... |

Mosquito's are not generally a problem on the North Coast, but it depends on where you're visiting, and of course the real WNV problem is the bird reservoir population, because mosquitoes are pretty ubiquitous, and so far at least 14 common California mosquito species are confirmed WNV vectors (but with varying efficiency).
Most people are not predicting WNV incidence on the North Coast this year, although it is only a matter of time. Birds fly.
on edit: ok, I just realized that the first paragraph might not make a whole lot of sense. My point was that although mosquitoes are not usually a big problem here, it won't take many mosquitos to cause a WNV public health problem if the bird community reservoirs the virus. There are lots of mosquito species that cross the bird/mammal boundary, even if bites are relatively infrequent.
Google "West Nile Virus California" for state-wide distribution maps.
