So what ever happened to the Grey Panthers anyway?
When the Grey (gray?) Panthers were making headlines, I was young, so didn't pay much attention. Now I qualify. I am so stunned that the elections might be suspended, that I make a serious/not-so-serious suggestion: Grey Panthers arise, take to the streets, show the younger people how it's done. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that a Presidential election might be suspended. We are in the age of the terrorist, and each election from now on can be highjacked by terrorist threat. In another thread, someone asked about contingency plans if the suspension comes to pass. A few months ago, I would have laughed at such a suggestion, and am now just freaked out that it is now an important, viable suggestion...make plans now. Why in the hell has this one thing hit me so hard? It makes me sick to my stomach with dread and loathing.

1. They need to reorg, fast.
The DOL just GUTTED green thumb--a jobs program for elderly persons who live in poverty. The new regulations and income requirements effectively killed the program. If you lose your house & move in with your kids, their income counts. If the grandkids get student LOANS, that counts against Grandma as "income" too. It's atrocious.

3. They made seniors a powerful political force - after their leader
Maggie (can't recall her last name) died they seemed to fall apart. What a shame - they have been ignored by pols ever since.

8. They got what they wanted.. Reagan raised the Boomer's FICA
Edited on Sun Jul-11-04 02:42 PM by SoCalDem
and they got extra in their SS.. There was enough extra held from ours, that WE would have plenty when we retired too.. Republicans stole it..The oldsters in the 70's, 80's & 90's were happy enough, so they quit protesting..They were already retired at 70.. we will still be working when we are 70.:(...and lots of them had military pensions/company pensions PLUS social security.)

The Boomers will probably not be "able" to protest when they give us the bitter pill.. We either won't be able to get time off from Walmart, or we'll be too sick/poor to do it.
