Is it true? Election postponement being discussed on mainstream news?
Edited on Sun Jul-11-04 09:39 PM by homelandpunk
I don't watch tv....somebody tell me they are not discussing this.
I keep seeing this here on DU more and more. But is it true? It's just out in the open on TV and radio now with no alarm? No red flags?
If true, we are already lost as a democracy that cannot be revived from the dead by Kerry or anyone else.
Because it sounds like this IS being discussed as a possibility, and yet my understanding is there is no one saying "WAIT A FUCKING MINUTE!!!" except for us, and a few web sites.
If you have actually seen it discussed on TV news or opinion shows, please tell me what shows, who, and what they are saying. These Pepsodent-smiley fucks are just reporting it as just another fucking post-9/11 story????? I hope you can tell me that this is not true. Should I start watching TV again for news to clue me in to the hell into which we are descending? I really don't want to watch TV news, but it seems like everyone here talks about things they are saying which generally confirms my choice to forego the lies and spin and propaganda. But every now and then something is discussed here about things making the rounds on mainstream news outlets, and when it is a subject like THIS....well,I can't afford not being informed if shit like this is going down. Should I start watching TV again? Cuz I think I need to be prepared to make that Canadian exodus. A few gun-loving liberals like myself won't be able to kill enough fascists to make a difference anyway, so Canada is in my sights if postponing elections is making the rounds with nary an eyebrow raised.
How did we get to this?

Exclusive: Election Day Worries

Michael Isikoff

July 19 issue - American counter-terrorism officials, citing what they call "alarming" intelligence about a possible Qaeda strike inside the United States this fall, are reviewing a proposal that could allow for the postponement of the November presidential election in the event of such an attack, NEWSWEEK has learned.

The prospect that Al Qaeda might seek to disrupt the U.S. election was a major factor behind last week's terror warning by Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge. Ridge and other counterterrorism officials concede they have no intel about any specific plots. But the success of March's Madrid railway bombings in influencing the Spanish elections—as well as intercepted "chatter" among Qaeda operatives—has led analysts to conclude "they want to interfere with the elections," says one official.

As a result, sources tell NEWSWEEK, Ridge's department last week asked the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel to analyze what legal steps would be needed to permit the postponement of the election were an attack to take place. Justice was specifically asked to review a recent letter to Ridge from DeForest B. Soaries Jr., chairman of the newly created U.S. Election Assistance Commission. Soaries noted that, while a primary election in New York on September 11, 2001, was quickly suspended by that state's Board of Elections after the attacks that morning, "the federal government has no agency that has the statutory authority to cancel and reschedule a federal election." Soaries, a Bush appointee who two years ago was an unsuccessful GOP candidate for Congress, wants Ridge to seek emergency legislation from Congress empowering his agency to make such a call. Homeland officials say that as drastic as such proposals sound, they are taking them seriously—along with other possible contingency plans in the event of an election-eve or Election Day attack. "We are reviewing the issue to determine what steps need to be taken to secure the election," says Brian Roehrkasse, a Homeland spokesman.

3. Yes, I just heard it on CNN
about half an hour ago. It was a news story. The Federal Election Assistance Commission - whatever that is - is working on what to do in the event of a terrorist attack before on on Election Day.

4. Don't postpone -- instead, voting should be done via mail...like w/taxes
The simplest solution to any potential interference with the elections is to conduct voting by way of U.S. mail...just like we do with our income taxes.

That way, the issue immediately goes away, and bushco has no excuses to postpone the election. Obviously, what they have in mind is a dramatic
uncovering of a fiendish plot, followed by a postponed election.
