17. He came to Tulsa

To sign books at a Borders and then have a concert on a Tuesday night (your career is still going gangbusters when you're rocking T-Town on a Tuesday - oh, yeah). Anyway, one of my hobbies is getting pictures taken with right-wing idiots (at the same Borders, I got a picture with Pat Buchanan). Here now for your reading pleasure is my experience.

Big turn-out for the Nuge. My girlfriend at the time and I went there to get a book signed and a picture. They sent us up to the second floor where he was signing in different groups, and we were snaked around all the different bookshelves waiting for our turn for at least an hour. My girlfriend is Colombian so we started talking in Spanish to 1. Make fun of the rednecks around us and 2. To hopefully piss them off since Nuge is big on English Only laws. We slipped back into English a couple of times making some jokes which attracted the attention of two teen boys ahead of us who thought they were interesting and funny by telling us how loud they can burp and pointing out a book called, "Nigger" in the African-American section and giggling. Their dad was wearing a vintage (never before washed it looked like) Damn Yankees shirt and hat, and it looked like he had all of 4 teeth in his head. Finally got the book signed and a picture (I always stick my tongue out without the conservative noticing). Ted hands me the book and says, "Enjoy. There's a lot of wisdom in that book." I actually hurt myself stifling a laugh. Girlfriend and I go to a restaurant to eat and read gems like, "The point of living is to be alive! If you're not alive, you're not living!"

A couple of weeks later, I give the book to my brother-in-law who's a nice guy but conservative. He's also a gun/bow hunter like Ted so I figured he might have heard of him. He has but only as a singer and doesn't care for him since he's more country. Still bro-in-law is very appreciative of the book (Kill It and Grill It) and thanks me profusely.

A couple of weeks later I see him again and ask what he thought of the book. He replied, "Jamie, when I read the book, I thought he was trying to be funny because I didn't think anybody would actually talk like this, but then I saw him on an ESPN show, and he really is THAT stupid!" He still likes the books for the recipes though. My sister chimed in and said, "Ted is all talk and no walk when it comes to hunting. All he did on the show was drive around in his stupid-looking SUV!"

I liked hearing that from them. :)
