This is the kind of attitude that concerns me (Re: the Draft)
Read the whole article, but my point concerns the excerpt below. I worry that if the draft comes back, in spite all of our predictions of unrest in the streets, most young people will just obediently go because the government says they have to go.

http://www.theolympian.com/home/news/20040711/topstories/93983.shtml

At South Puget Sound Community College, Danny Ho, who's of draft age, said earlier this year that he largely forgot about his Selective Service registration soon after he completed the form on his 18th birthday.

"I've never really thought about it," said Ho, who's studying computer-aided design. "If I'm signed up, I'm signed up. If they call me, I guess I have no choice but to take it."

1. I don't know
I would hope people would think it through better than that, but that's also largely true. I mean if we let them reinstitute a draft, and that becomes the law of the land, than there are only a few ways around it, none of which are particularly attractive.

Still one would hope the prospect of a draft would inspire people of that age to vote the other direction.

3. good chance it WON'T happen
it took the military a long time to finally get an "all-volunteer military" during wartime and i suspect they are very pleased with it. given the high level of technical training and qualifications required to even be a cpl. these days - drafting a bunch of people who don't even want to be there and given them guns and a couple of months traning is probaly the LAST thing the military chiefs want to do. congressmen always create bills around wartime for the draft (hr163) but most of them don't know jack. i think the only place people would go if there were a draft anyways is straight into the inactive reserves - to replace the reservists would go active if they actually needed them afar. but i'm not an expert on this - just an hscp E3 / student.

4. During Vietnam most draftees went
straight to country after about 6-8 weeks basic. If the 8 administration retains hold on power and proceeds with the war groundwork that has been laid I see no alternative for them to get the warm bodies they need except thru draft. You're right that the military brass don't want it, but it's the civilians who are in charge and we have a war pResident.

is that his attitude will change quickly and dramatically once a few of his friends get sent off to the slaughter and every trip he makes to the mailbox leaves a puddle in his pants
